Canadian police have arrested an Ottawa man and charged him with participation in a terrorist group. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police said in a February 3 statement that Awso Peshdary, 25, was also charged with facilitating the activity of a terrorist groupPeshdary is suspected of having ties to the Islamic State (IS) militant group.
Charges in absentia were also announced against two other men police say left Canada to join IS: Khadar Khalib, 23, and John Maguire, 24. Maguire appeared in an IS video overseas and who reportedly might have been killed recently.
The charges are reportedly related to the arrest of three men in Ottawa last month. All three are charged with crimes related to terrorism. Royal Canadian Mounted Police Chief Superintendent Jennifer Strachan said at a news conference that Peshdary had worked with Maguire to send other Canadians to Syria to join the IS.
Canadian police stressed they had been monitoring the suspects for some time and the public was never in any danger. up
