NAIROBI — Masked al-Shabab militants stormed dormitories at Garissa University College in northeastern Kenya early Thursday, killing 70 people, the Kenyan government said.

More than 500 students were rescued after the militants stormed the campus around 5:30 a.m., shooting students and taking some hostage. Seventy-nine people were injured, according to Kenya’s National Disaster Operation Center.

Students at the college were sleeping when members of the Islamist militant group al-Shabab entered the campus and fatally shot two security guards.

Kenya identifies one of the al-Shabab Garissa attackers

Kenyan authorities say they have identified one of the militants who attacked Garissa University, killing 148 people.

Abdirahim Abdullahi, a member of al-Shabab, is the son of a regional government official.

Services are being held across Kenya to remember victims of the attack.
