A "jealous" man who mutilated and killed his estranged wife in their Melbourne home while their four children slept nearby has been jailed for 21 years.

Bona Lual, 37, pleaded guilty to fatally stabbing 31-year-old Suzi Oghia at her Noble Park home in 2013.

Supreme Court Judge Justice Terry Forrest told the court Lual followed Ms Oghia for about a month before murdering her, threatening to kill her and any man she dated.

He said Lual had wanted to reunite with his estranged wife, but she was not interested.

"For that, she payed with her life," Justice Forrest said.

"Your actions not only destroyed one life, but it left your children effectively as orphans.

"In one selfish action they've been deprived of a mother and a father."

'He described Lual as "jealous and controlling" and said Ms Oghia feared for her life before her murder.

Ms Oghia and Lual moved to Australia from South Sudan in 2005.

Justice Forrest said he took Lual's difficult upbringing into account in the sentence.

He said when Lual was 12, he and his mother were raped by rebels and his mother died weeks later.

Lual was then made a servant to an army officer and was later imprisoned and tortured.

"Your early life was characterised by great hardship and acts of cruelty," Justice Forrest said.

He ordered Lual serve 21 years in prison, with a non-parole period of 16 years and 6 months.

The children are being cared for by a member of Melbourne's Sudanese community.'

This is what happens when you let people from war torn third world countries into civilised western countries. Did those who let them in really imagine them to live up to our community standards/expectations? I certainly think not.
