I stand corrected. He is a Syrian father/Irish mother born in Alabama:
Hammami was born to Shafik Hammami and Debra Hadley, and grew up in Daphne, Alabama, with an older sister Dena.[4] Shafik Hammami grew up in Damascus, Syria, and came to Alabama to go to college, later becoming a civil engineer.[4][5] His father is of Syrian Muslim descent. His mother is of Irish descent.[6] The children were initially raised as Southern Baptist, but also practiced Muslim culture at home. Finding her father too restrictive, Dena left the home at 16 and went to live with friends.[4]

he is at least mixed, he has a middle eastern surname and name and it no coicidence that he speaks arabic.
i guess he joined al shabaab because he was a friend of some somali who had similar ideas of his. he chose al shabaab not to be put on a pedestal but because that was the easiest way to "fight for the caliphate". i am sure he didnt see any difference between the somalis and his fellow middle easterners. they have one progressive trait and it s theit "antiracism" . i remember a pashtun taliban saying "pashtun, azeri ,etc it doesnt matter , we are all sons of allah" lol
btw are you a sympathisizer or just trolling around? you re the tanned version of king niko

Al Shabaab are like the Taliban...they are not seeking a Global caliphate, just to rule their locale under strict salafi sharia. I dont support them of course, but I think it's folly for a non-Somali to join them. Somalia is a very, very complex place. Allegiances change almost by the day...Some clans pledge allegiance to al Shabaab out of a grievance with the gov't, then when their elders negotiate something with the politicians in Mog. the same people who join, lay down their arms...It has a pseudo-clannish undercurrent, and is really just a 'tool' (like a rusty rifle in your shed) aggrieved clans use...when they dont get their way from the federal gov't, they threaten to join or support Shabaab...or if they need some 'extortion' they say there is al shabaab in the area, and they need aid $$$ to fight them, and if the aid isnt given they will be forced to join them (which is just a bluff in most cases).
Al Shabaab ofcourse actively recruits in the west, and they will take whoever they can (although they are paranoid about spies more than anyone), but if you assume some guy born in Alabama, without any 'foundation' (clan support) is just gonna waltz in and offer leadership roles, or overstep his boundary, this what happens.
