Stalin was very happy to see Nazis destroying the west, attack against Paris and London, after purges in 1938 the Georgian prepared a army to invade the whole world (look at their symbolism with red globe marked by hammer and sickle on it from 1930s parades. So they weren't hiding they wanted to make whole world one big slave gulag. His plan was that Hitler will destroy Europe and the USSR will easily invade it. Stalin didn't take seriously reports that Germans gathered millions of soldiers next to their border, he trusted Molotov-Rub pact and was trying to gang rape Finns. It was a shock when Germans striked. Actually USSR won the war but it was Phyrric victory. 25 million dead + whole Western Russia ashes. The strength of communism as ideology, freshness and supremacy was hit, mortal wound. Later there is Cold War but USSR never recovered in reality. So it was like Ottoman hit in Lepanto but advancing some more time toward Central Europe, or Napoleon hit in combat but advancing little more and takes Kremlin : the last show of power by the mortally wounded. USSR lost in fact by winning.

Lenin and Trotsky had plans to spread the revolution throughout Europe. Stalin did not have such plans. He did create a buffer with Eastern Europe and rightfully so as their weakness led to Russia being invaded multiple times. Even today NATO expands towards Russia's borders. Stalin's paranoia served him well.
yep, because Stalin was already dead

What buffer zone? If Stalin really wanted peace and stay behind his borders why he made a deal with Nazis and were allies with them sharing Poland and taking Finland? You are ignorant. Trotzky was deluded, romantic Commie who believed they could invade the world easily. Stalin was more rational, he said socialism in one country but until creating a superstate that will invade the world. Trotzky was also against too much violence, it's why Communism rejected him then killed him with hammer hit on his skull. Stalin's plan would work were it not for the Nazi hit, German strike was mortal wound. Stalin was very happy seeing Hitler destroyed Western Europe and waiting both sides weaken each other to strike himself in the end. 1938 purge prepared a full red army cleaning remnants of old Tsar institutions. But German strike was too heavy and recovery never happened. I bet you are one of these guys believing Red Army liberated Eastern and Central Europe.
