I was a teenager. Greece was for cheap holidays and about the rest we didn't care. For as far as we were concerned the whole area was a crater. But then again: it's the traditional way for us to look at most of Europe. If for most of your history, just every main-lander neighbor had the intention to come and loot your country, you tend to start looking overseas. The pro-European sentiments were only held by officials. We thought it would be a market, about the rest we didn't care.

Because that's all of Eastern Europe (including Greece) was viewed at the time. You think that all people in Latin America or Asia are poor (far from it, actually !), it's not too different from how we felt about your area.
