Making a good horror movie is the hardest task out of all genres.
The only one I liked that was releases the past 5 years was the witch.
Maybe its more scary for christians

I was formally and severely reprimanded in rehab on account of lending a schizophrenia spectrum friend (and fellow rehab member) a copy of, The Mothman Prophecies, to read, after the dude asked me to lend him a scary book.
The subject reader couldn't sleep right for a week or so (he was already prone to seeing ghosts (his interpretation) every once in a while, but subsequent to my lending him the book, his ghost events became more intense and more troubling).

I was in rehab due to dxm.
He was in rehab due to meth.
He is a lovely human being.

I honestly regret not watching more horror movies as kid, they had a way better and greater impact. If its not purely splatter, you watch horror movies to get scared, but that doesnt happen at all as a adult. The only way to catch adults is by psychopatic horror. Paranormal Activity did a good job by using surveillance cameras and generally made the approach of the protagnosists somewhat realistic.
In old movies they hear someone getting butchered in the basement, instead of running away or call the cops their first reaction is to investigate it unarmed haha
Eddie Murphy summed it up

Regarding that same friend of mine:
After we had worked our way up the levels, horror aficionado (Mr. Mothman), another rehab client ("John") and I (Dna8) were allowed to go on a "day trip" to downtown by ourselves.
During our expedition we stopped in at an internet cafe.
John called Mothman and I to his computer and said he would like to show us something fucked up.
John began to play a video of an Isis beheading for us.
I managed to watch the whole thing (but found it very difficult to do so).
Mothman - he has heart, I'll give him that - was clearly more distressed than I but also determined to watch the video in its entirety.
About halfway through the video, Mothman began to gag - at first lightly, then heavily.
John and I tried to get a vessel for Mothman to vomit in, in time, but the latter ended up vomiting all over his shirt and the keyboard.

I was meaningfully disturbed by the video and my pscyhe cannot accommodate such material (something like bestgore is too much for me, by far).

Rest in Peace, victims of such violence.
