Japanese assaults on The Phillipines, British Possessions (Malay) and Dutch Indonesia to the south were facilitated by France, under Marshall Petain (Catholic allies of Hitler), who literally opened the French-controlled Vietnam to Japan, enabling Japan to set up military bases there.
