I don't agree, but I do see a lot of misuse of drums (and percussion in general), that might account for the proposed idea that "drums ruin music"; anyway, my biggest complaint about drums is that they can become overbearing and too loud (especially with popular music).

This Renaissance Music provides a good understanding of the inspiration behind drumming percussion, when used properly. There're countless other examples, from just about any time period. The problem arises when drummers ham it up, or overpower, or veil the music (in its entirety).
