A look into why the Orkney Islands is interested in leaving #scotland and the #uk and becoming a part of #norway instead. Following #brexit and the Scottish independence referendum, the UK is facing yet another dispute over sovereignty and self-determination. I explore the history of these islands, which at various points were under the control of the Gaels, Picts, Celts, #romans, #vikings, and eventually the kingdoms of Scotland and Norway. I also delve into the enormous implications that this case could have on the future of #international #law and #global #politics.
Wake up and smell the coffee.

Are you daft , mate ? Orkney was annexed to Norway 875 but is not Norwegian, anymore. However, even if it theoretically returned to Norway it is a pretty small island(s) relatively speaking and AFAIK there are more sheep than people in the highlands.

With Brexit, the United Kingdom left the European Union. Now the Orkney Islands, one of its most remote parts is mulling break-up plans of its own.
The group of windswept islands off the coast of Scotland says it could leave the UK. The local government on the Orkney Islands says it's just not getting enough funding, and that the oil and gas-rich neighbor of Norway might be a better fit. Even if there is a consensus for reform, any change would take years.
Wake up and smell the coffee.
