Although I live in a mid-size city, it's so filled with first generation rural migrants or peasants, that they some years ago they still brought live animals to slaughter in front or the back of their buildings(usually poultry, but on Easter lambs too). I have a neighbor that used to bring already killed pigs at least once a year and he proceeded to cut up the dead hog in smaller hunks of meat, like some amateur butcher. In the countryside they do this every year, a few days before Christmas.
