Apart from the distance to the destination, of course.

- The time of day you travel.
- How far you book in advance.
- The speed/type of train in which you travel.
- Anything else (please state).

Generally speaking, I have noticed in the UK it tends to be mainly the first two factors, while in France and Spain it is more the third.

In the UK, some rail companies still have first and standard class, but others have gradually phased the distinction out (principally those operating mainly local and regional services).
