"Mostly out of our control"-hardly. The current changes we are seeing are entirely within our own control and caused by us. Scientists are very well aware of the fact that the climate has changed in the past and that the earth has experienced much greater extremes than what we're seeing now, but the rate of change is unprecedented and will lead to calamity that humans as a civilization are not equipped to handle. This is the entire argument but it is lost on people.

Of course it is. There are normal climactic shifts in the natural world over time, but this recent change is absolutely mostly due to humans. Hell, we even had a Little Ice Age a few hundred years ago, but came out of it by the mid 1800s partly due to human industry.
Yes it is hypocritical that the West is taking the stance it is toward China and India, but what choice does the world have? Got to move to alternatives.
