West Virginia is rather redundant since there is no reason for it to be separate from Virginia except one time just before the Civil War when the majority of its inhabitants decided to align with the Union over the Confederates. I'm pretty sure the Civil War is long over and West Virginia should rejoin Virginia. I don't know why it wasn't done during the Reconstruction era but it seems like a major oversight. Some other states like the Carolinas and the Dakotas should unify too as well to cut down on redundancy.

West Virignia is a Democratic state. Virginia tends to lean right. I think they're too different politically to reunite.

They've all had their own governments for a long time now. West Virginia in particular is all Appalachian, and has its own unique government culture, they are Democrats but more like the old Dixiecrats, populist instead of liberal. They've been able to stay that way because they are mostly white, mostly poor, and mostly rural. In just about everywhere else in the country, it has turned into nonwhites and urban upper/middle class liberal elites as Democrats and everyone else trending Republican by default.
Better ideas:
Split up large states like California and Texas.
Merge the rural parts of Virginia and Maryland with West Virginia or Delaware, and merge Baltimore and the Washington suburbs into the District of Columbia.

They're just names. They don't share more similarities than any other two bordering states.

What the...I don't even...you know the Civil War was about things like money and land and railroads, right? It wasnt just about black slavery, in fact some historians would argue that it was actually a minor point tacked on later.
You're not even from the States it appears, so you wouldn't understand, especially not being from West Virginia. Because I am, and an important thing to understand is that West Virginia is even culturally and geographically different from Virginia. Its extremely mountainous and the only state in the country that is entirely within the Appalchian mountain range. Its a different landscape and history than Virginia, and if you didn't know this, there were other states that originally were connected, like Tennessee was part of the Carolinas.
And now WV is vastly politically different, being more liberal than VA.
So you don't know that of which you speak, you just seem annoyed that there is a Virginia and West Virginia, but there are reasons for that. Boo hoo to you if you're just mad you don't like to memorize all 50 states.
It amazes me sometimes what people DON'T KNOW about the American South, yet feel so freeeeee to talk about it as though they do.

The concentration of political power should be rejected. No, West Virginia and Virginia should not be reunited.

No, they both have their own idenity and I see no reason to reunify them.
New Jersey on the other hand should be seperated into South Jersey and the other part. They each have their own culture which clashes at times and people up north are no where as nice as us hicks down. We actually tried it in 1980 and almost pulled it off except for some glitch in the state constitution. Damned shame, we'd be better off with the ugly baggage of the north. It would have loked like this:
