Hi All,

I'm an individual of mixed parentage, with a Latin American mother and Arab(Levantine) father. When asking for classifications on this forum, many posters had previously suggested I had a heavy AmerIndian component of approx 25%. I thought I'd share pictures plus my 23 and Me results for comparison; my AmerInd component is only 4%, suggesting that genotype doesn't always conform well to phenotype. I also have less Middle Eastern ancestry than expected; my father is from the Levant, but genetically, I'm only 22% Middle Eastern. Anyhow, I thought I'd share this for those curious regarding the expression of relatively small admixtures.

I'm the female in these pics:

DNA Results:

68% European ( a full 40% Italian, and interestingly only 7.5% Iberian)
22% Middle Eastern/ N African
5% Sub Saharan African
4% AmerInd
.9% E Asian
0.1% Oceanian

23andme underestimates Middle Eastern admixture and sometimes half Levantines get a lot of the "Italian" category. Your best bet would be to upload the data to GEDmatch. You look very Latin American.

Can you post screenshots of your actual 23andme ancestry composition (sub-regional resolution) and global similarity map?

I think it has to do with both facts that Levantine genetics can be lumped with Italian and that lots of Italian descendants live in L.America :)

It's not possible that you're only 22% Middle Eastern with having a Levantine Arab father. Some of that Middle Eastern is probably hidden in that Italian score, that's what happened with me when I first did 23andme and before my parents tested and hooked them up to my Ancestry Composition for Split View. They had given me 50% Italian 7% Middle Eastern and the rest Unspecified North Euro in the beginning. Since you're half Colombian it's possible that your Amerindian score is also being underestimated.

I highly recommend that you download your raw data from 23andme and send it to Dr. Doug McDonald. He is an expert genealogist/geneticist and can give you more accurate DNA test results. Here is his email address: jdmcdona@illinois.edu

I also recommend you upload your raw data to the www.gedmatch.com website and try out their admixture tools and calculators there. I'm sure you will find them very helpful. Although they unfortunately aren't accepting new uploads until December 1st due to being backloaded.

What is your mtdna haplogroup, by the way?!

Is this your second account here since you say you've asked for classifications on this forum and it's your first post here.....

Also, I remember you from when you made a similar thread on AnthroScape. :)

You can easily pass as full Middle Eastern. The only thing that makes you stand out is the eyes btw. The eyes are clear not Middle Eastern, but it's subtle feature that some ME's have anyways. I don't think you look Amerindian you look what you are Middle Eastern or an East Med Caucasian.
