Going by this and assuming it's correct, it's Slovenia:

Not sure I would classify Slovenes as proper Southern Europeans, so I'll say North Italians

By far Italians from south Tyrol if we classify them southern Europeans and not a germanic minority. Then north Italians, North Iberians and Slovenes.

If Slovenia is southern Europe than Austria (almost genetically identical) and Hungary (more southern shifted than Slovenia on average) are too . They have nothing to do with Southern Europeans except they live in southern half of Europe!

kinda surprised the lombard duchy of Benevento (in the center of Southern Italy) actually left a trace that big

You have a point, Slovenia can be classified as Central, Southern or even eastern Europe. Some classify Slovenia as Balkan country and some do not accept that.

Jana

Genetic barrier between Slovenes and NE Italians from Friuli is biggest in entire Europe, they are genetically not overlaping at all.

North Italians yes but they are also Celticised as are Bavarians

Biologically speaking, Slovenes are East-Central Europeans.

My notion of southern Europe is geographical, not genetical or political.

North Italians are SW Europeans and they have significant Celto-Germanic contribution.

I think the fact that was part of Yugoslavia made it more comlicated. In cultural terms Slovenia was affected by Balkan countries.

This sums up how I see Europe

"European subregions according to Eurovoc (the thesaurus of the European Union). Southern Europe is marked yellow on this map."

Yes but I had no culture in mind but genetics.
Anyway Slovenian culture is Central European but it was Balkanized just like Croatian was. On a smaller scale than us I will add but still it was.

In terms of phenotypes, do Northern Italians have a high med influence? If yes, do their med came from Celts or from the Latins( Romans)?

They look south Euro on average but not classic med as South Italians. Alpinids and norics are extremely common phenotypes among North Italians from what I have seen.

I agree Slovenia is more close to Czech in genetic terms( Slavs with some germanic blood) rather Bulgaria (Slavs mixed with ancient Balkan tribes like Thracian people).

Slovenia is eastern Europe.

Rather Central Europe but Slovenians count as South Slavs not Eastern. Even Parts of Friuli and Trieste are considered Central Europe.

Slovenes are South Slavs but have Central European influences. Geographically they are sometimes placed in South Europe but culturally are Central.

And Iberia.

According to the map posted by Endovelico, Iberia not that much, only Portugal, Catalonia and Galicia. It seems even parts of Sicily and South Italy have more Germanic influences.

But the surprise is Turkey...

According to this map the eastern half of Macedonia is just as Germanic as most of Slovenia and most of Croatia. Must be those 5th century Gothic raids and later Saxon mining settlements.

Living in the southern half of Europe is exactly what makes people be South European, if you did not notice it

Any fuckin country that touchs the Mediterranean, plus Portugal, is a South European country. FACT.

most Slavic DNA among southern Europeans: Slovenes

most Germanic DNA among southern Europeans: Slovenes

if we count only the important Med countries (Spain, southern France, Italy, Greece), then the answer for both questions is: none

Med influence comes from European Farmer. Mediterranean peaks in Sardinians. The term Mediterranean is self-explanatory.

Slovenes are not southern Europeans LOL :picard1:Being Southern European is mainly about geography.

But anyways, for argument's sake, if South Slavs are included in South Europe, then who would you say have the second most Germanic influence after Slovenes? Croats/Bosniaks/Serbs or North Italians?

Macedonians Bulgarians Montenegeins and Serbian Serbs are genetically more southern than eastern European so South Slavs isnt monolothic block.

Croats have almost no Germanic at all, much less than North Italians or South French, we are just mix of Slavic and Balkan excluding NW Croatia that has Celtic blood but not too much Germanic.
