I have 6 matches from Poland (excluding close family). FTDNA is much more popular here.

I notice the same for Romanians although I got 10 matches. There seems to be lack of DNA testing with the major companies in Eastern Europe. AncestryDNA has some vast category called "Eastern European" that includes everything from Polish people to Romanians. The idea that they can't tell apart Polish from Romania is kinda crazy.

Did you buy their kit or was it a raw data transfer?

I transferred FTDNA data but I don't think it has impact on how many matches one will get (FTDNA and MyHeritage are using very similar chips).

Kind of. I suppose North-Western Germans have more matches with Dutch people than with, say, Bavarians.

Low Germans and High Germans can be considered two different ethnicities (Dutch are close to Low Germans).

Yes I don't have any ancestry outside of Ireland via paper trail. I'd love to though. It would make it interesting. :) I think that some populations aren't well represented in dna companies databases. Ancestry is slowly improving their databases though and appear to be getting more accurate although I think for mixed people it's always going to be difficult to assign ancestry correctly. With countries like France and Germany, for example, they need to split them up into regions to get anything close to accuracy. Even a small country like Netherlands has differences between the north and south.

I've noticed MyHeritage gives Ashkenazi Jewish to a lot of Irish. This is an example.

I have tons of matches with Jews on Gedmatch and Davidski says that I'm 0% Jewish. It's because they have Ukrainian/Polish/Russian ancestry.

Since MH in December allowed Poles to buy genetic tests, we can expect growing number of Polish matches.

But even more Polish people will change his account assignement from other country to Poland.
For example months ago I transfered raw file from FTDNA (for my parents also) and I had to use VPN to create three "American" accounts (with fake American addresses). Now I change them to Polish. Two months ago I had only 3 Polish matches, now 12.
BTW I guess some Poles who know better German language than English created "German" accounts back then. And this is source of some "German" matches in my case also.
But I have matches with one German family with rooths from Lower Silesia and Pomerania, person mailed with me and could be some connection through my mother line and German colonists near Piotrków.

I looked at my Ashkenazi Jewish matches and most of them have Irish and British names. :) How bizarre! There are a minority that have Jewish sounding names. I've still got 2.8% Ashkenazi Jewish though. How does that work?

I have 8756 "matches" in all ethnicities (you must calculate by yourself), but bear in mind most people are duplicated in few categories, because nobody have only one component (or just a few people).
Ashkenazi matches are 260, so it's not much I think, compared to total number. And most of them have this component in minority.

From what I saw in your link your total number of Ethnicity matches is supposed to be lower than mine.

The only two reasons why I probably have more matches in the USA than Great Britain is because the USA is a bigger country with a much larger population and because more Americans get tested than any other nationality. Australia is large too but it's population is not as large as America's population.

My mom gets the ocassional Romanian living abroad, but the majority of the matches for a given country are still natives.

Well not overwhelmingly Romanian but a mix of Romanian - Polish - Ukrainian. I just scrolled through them again and I think the Ukrainians and the Poles (each) outnumber the Romanians. In Switzerland I see more Ex-Yugo names and some Romanians. I think the best ratio of native is Sweden and France.

This result above does not reveal much, if we consider that there are Brazilians all over the world.

So I dedicated myself to the difficult and boring task of excluding Brazilians, other Iberians and Italians in matches from countries further north. Of course, because I'm interested in that.
I also did not count German-Brazilians in Germany.
I tolerated some things like Germanic names in France and Slavic and Hungarian names in Germany.
I tried to make it as ethnically accurate as possible. Perhaps another false attribution has passed or some true national has ceased to pass.

The high number of matches in the UK, despite my DNA leaning more to the east, makes me think that Eastern Europeans do not adhere to this type of test very much.

I get a lot of Canadian results I notice compared to most people because of my Québécois ancestry so lots of matches there where people test. Another thing that stood out I really get no matches from Italy despite being 1/4 Italian. Guess it's not a big thing to DNA test in Italy, at least where my ancestry is from in the south.
