I manage to find this guy accidentally while browsing through my relative list. I missed him all this time because he has an unsual surname. All of his ancestry he listed is from the Zadar area, though there is no doubt about his ethnicity, all surnames are Croatian and very foreign to me (Belfranin, Gvardijan, Kospirić, etc.) and none of the ancestors have Italian first names. Unsually low Baltic component is the first thing that stands out:

What is Zadar history?

It was originally a Liburnian town that later became a part of the Roman empire. Later in the early Middle Ages Slavic settlers took over the area and the city became gradually slavicized, but as far as I know all coastal cities had autonomy from the local Slavic principalities, they kept their old administration and a form of latin was used in official documents. The city was later a part of the Venetian Republic from the 15th to the end of the 18th century after which it fell underneath the rule of the Austrian Empire. The rest you should already be familiar with. As for minorities, there were Italian, Serbian and Albanian settlers in the city, but I don't known much about their numbers or impact. What's obvious is that the Zadrani have completely outlier results compared to the rest of the Croatian ethnicity and I'm not even talking about those with recent foreign admixture like Robocop. It's surprising when you compare them to the rest of the Dalmatian Croats who have huge Slavic admixture and usually plot in Central Europe.

I have met a few Croats who tell me they have Serb ancestors I think the place is called Zagreb is that wrong or right?

Also, a Serbian friend of mine said Serbians a lot of the time formed much of the Roman elite.

Looking at it further, it seems the man in question is extremely old (like over 90!) and was probably tested by a relative. Also the grandfather, born in the first half of the 19th century is listed as adopted. The haplogroup FTDNA gives him is E-M35, meaning he could have some Italian ancestry, just not sure how much of it is recent.

Some Croats from Zagreb might have Serbian ancestry, it's a very mixed city with people who have ancestors from all over the place.

Regarding the second claim, that person is almost certainly a fan of the mechanical engineer, self-proclaimed historian Jovan I. Deretić. He and the like claim that Serbs are an ancient people who influenced all early civilisations xD You shouldn't pay any attention to that, lol.

Oh lol but aren't they all Dinaric anyway?

Racially what's the difference between a Dinaric Serb an Albanian from Kosovo and some North Central Italian from Rome.

Oh lol but aren't they all Dinaric anyway?

Racially what's the difference between a Dinaric Serb an Albanian from Kosovo and some North Central Italian from Rome.

Dinaric used to be the dominant phenotype (but far from being the only one), but that's not the case anymore. Croats nowadays seem to be mainly Alpines, while Serbs are mostly Med/Pontid. Also, the similarity in appearance doesn't matter when it comes to genes. All Italians are distant from South Slavs and among them there are great differences too (Sicilians and Lombards share pretty much only a lingustic and somewhat a cultural relation).

Also, a Serbian friend of mine said Serbians a lot of the time formed much of the Roman elite.

Indeed. The most famous Emperor or Rome was Bosniensis

Most of Croatians in Zadar are newcomers from Dalmatian hintherland and islands. Old urban population of Zadar which lived in city for centuries were mostly Italians. They were expelled by Croatian Partisans in 1945 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Istrian-Dalmatian_exodus

I think he is typical for Zadar genetics. Other two people from Zadar were also genetically like him.

Real natives of Zadar were not Italians but Romanized old Dalmatians. Italians came much later. But it was only city in Dalmatia with Italian majority until relatively recently.

Latin Dalmatians of Zadar were assimilatted by Venetians during the Venetian rule. Venetized old Dalmatians and settlers from Italy were mixed and created Zadar Italians.

agree

there is Slav admixture as well, because Croats started going to Dalmatian cities in late medieval but some took up ''Romance'' identity because it was more prestigious and represented higher culture

Istrian and Dalmatian Italians were mix of settlers from Italy during the Venetian rule and assimilatted local Slavs and Vlachs. Like Balkan Turks are mix of Anatolian settlers and islamized locals.

No, it wasn't. According to 1527 Zadar population census Croats made 75% of population of Zadar, at least judging by names. According to Serbian historian Jovan Tomić referring to some writing (population census of Zadar and surroundings) from 1608 now allegedly located in Serbian Academy of Science in Belgrade said that it is visible from that writing that the population of Zadar is Slavic, in villages and the town itself except for officials, soldiers, some priests and some craftsmen. During 13th or 14th century century for example there was still a struggle between Italians and Croats there. Ottoman invasion changed that.

After the loss of Lombary and Venice in the second half of the 19th century Austro-Hungary relocated many of its Italian officials, mostly soldiers to Zadar, as the capital of Dalmatia. That is when Italians started taking hold of the city and especially after Zadar was basically given to Italians (mostly thanks to Servs) in 1921 (Treaty of Rapallo) after which there was a mass exodus of Croats from Zadar and influx of Italians all the way until the WW2. Later Tito expelled them. Make no mistake thinking that those expelled Italians were all natives.

Dude, are you speaking only about city of Zadar or Zadar + surrounding villages.

Surrounding villages were never pupulated by Italians, but by Croatians, Serbs and even few Albanians (Arbanasi).

My friend's father is from Smoković full Serbian village 8 km east of Zadar https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smoković
His ancestors are recorded in Smoković in 1567.
He is I1-Z63.
