My timeline from the Iron Age to the present. I set up very conservative limits, over 5 cM segment value, which is seen as most reliable by all testers, and maximum required SNP's.

Limiting only ten samples the picture still shows certain Merovingian connection. This is a recently disputed idea, although was before recent linguistic "realization" in Finland a generally accepted theory based on archaeology.
There are obviously several weaknesses regarding generated ancient segments and for that reason these results should be taken with a grain of salt, but everything looks fine if we look only at archaeology and forget newer linguistic theories made after the 80's.

This is very correct. The problem is that the Finnish history research is in a big crisis. Few Finnish historians have courage today to search times before the 14th century, because all dominant theories have been based on linguistics since the 80s and linguists say that Finns came from Urals. Today Finnish linguists say that the Finns came from Urals, not only Finnic languages. The problem is that Germanic loan words in Baltic Finnic languages are too old to serve these peculiar ideas. So, if you want to be a reputable researcher in Finland you have to deny many things, including archaeological evidences, be quietly or fabricate stories, for instance how Germans hail from Volga and were pushed to Scandinavia and Germany by Finnic warriors. This is something that can work in a small linguistic area, because these clowns hold two realities, one in home land and another abroad. Bad thing is that Finnish geneticists have to follow if they want to be reputable researchers in Finland, because our universities are small and you have to ensure your career.

Only problem is that almost all paternal haplogroups went through a genetic bottle neck around 5000 years ago. For that reason we have to find ancient samples to find out where did our ancestors lived and where they came from. Some random Neolithic or Mesolithic I1 samples have been found, all from Europe outside steppe.

In calendar dates, Finns are estimated to have mixed with an East Eurasian CDX-like population between 170BC-320AD and with a NW European GBR-like population between 1100-1380AD.
The central date of the latter estimate is 1,240AD, which corresponds quite closely to the beginning of Swedish rule and is in the middle of the 13th. century, between the time when Finland was initially claimed for western Christendom (12th c.) and the time when the conflict between Sweden and Russia was settled (14th c.).

Dienekes is a poor author in this case. All glory for him in many matters, but he has a little clue regarding the Finnish history. Simply taking into account Finnish I1, no other female or male haplogroups, we can say that D. was too straightforward and simplified his results to correspond his point of view. Finnish I1 is a son of the Scandinavian L22-CTS2208 branch and is in Finland exclusively around 2000 years old. The result is proven by FtDna's Big-Y results and Y-Full. He made also an error with Siberian-Finnish admixture timings; his conclusion was that the source was Nganasan, it might be of same ancestry, but the method he used gives same dates for all Siberian-Finnish admixtures, no matter who the Siberians are, they can be Chukchi as well. This happens because small IBD's he used tend to approximate statistic noise.

I don't buy this. It was more about male clans. Men were relatives, because the world was cruel and warlike. They had to have trust and relatives protected each other. Still today cruel and lawless organizations prefer "blood brothers". Some European male haplogroups died almost out, some survived.

This individual was a 50+ year old female buried in a shallow oval grave near the Linton settlement near Cambridge. The burial was aligned north to south, and she was laid on her right side with head facing west. She was approximately 1.58m tall and had Osteoarthritis and spondylosis deformans in her spine and wrist. Enamel hypoplasia indicates she had experienced health stress during childhood.

It's an individual from the Mesolithic, that's why.
You should expect only to share IBD hits that are less than 1cM with such people, and such shared segments are very difficult to detect unless you have full genome sequences and can use rare alleles in your IBD run.
So your IBD results are bullshit.
You can't match an ancient sample at 30 cM. It's impossible.

As I already wrote there is much debatable about IBDs regarding ancient samples, but no fire without smoke. There ARE many IBD fixations, expecially near centromeres and those false IBDs can last thousands years. But again, there are also a positive correlation and it is pure logic to see it. South Europeans tend to get Mediterranean segments and Germanic speakers North European segments. It is logical, not debatable. I know Davidski. Davidski simplifies things now.

What I quoted is about IBD matches not their modern population distances which are by most people detected as simple K15 (I saw many examples where ordering on the list was the same). So don't compare apples to oranges.

There will always be false segments, but you have to look all this as statistics. Weather forecast can't say exactly where rain drops fall, but it can say that rain is coming. Davidski maybe is now overjoyed because MTA equates Langobards and Goths with ancient Scandinavians. He has always objected it.

Generally true but in specific MTA case their statistics is based on false assumptions (too low initial treshold caused too high IBD values).
Lemminkäinen
01-19-2020, 03:09 PM
And I wrote also about statistical noise. Some ones believe, even researchers, that the IBD noise level is fixed, around 1-2 cM or something near it. But it is not true. IBD noise depends on the population, the effective population size. In big populations the noise level can be very low, but for example Saamis' IBD noise is around 3-4 cM. Then those centromere fixations make sure exceptions. And some commercial testers delete chromosomal areas to avoid unwanted results following purely their false historical ideas.

No, I dont mean 23, they have their own methods tailored for American white people. I meant FtDna's autosomal ancestry. Once I got Scottish ancestral links and I reported them to see how they react. They simply removed those segments in a week after my email and were sorry that "shit happens"! This is hilarious because I know, I have Scottish ancestry from the 17th century proven by church registers. I can't dispute my ancestral birth records, but either I can't say why they decided to delete those IDBs. This kind of events set a dark cloud over the credibility of commercial testers. Should I believe the result after mods they decide to do?

Say what you will, the setup of MyTrueAncestry is well organized and even gives links to the studies, all these other noob DNA services (dnaland, etc. etc.) don't even compare. But yeah, as a rule the older a sample is, the less long each cM will be. Getting 50 cM is very suspicious, but might have to do with the way the raw data is sequenced: like 23andme doesn't do entire DNA sequencing obviously, but they hit just like 3 % of the entire genome.

Maybe. That would be the most money-saving way - You don't even have to write the alogorithim just plug it into GEDmatch Eurogenes every time someone pays you 150$ and uploads their shit
Writing such things may urge him to do it lol. Maybe he is lazy.
But again, tell us who is MTA creator?:) First you wrote as you knew and then...
Didn't realize he reads this regularly, but good for him if he does. It'll give him better revenue.

I tell you I have in FTDNA very high (comparing to other, except my family) Scottish link too. I asked this woman by email and she she isn't aware of any Polish ancestry. I ask FTDNA about it and will see if they will remove it too:)
Actuslly FtDna serves us in Europe much better

I think Davidski is just mad (as always lol) that he has serious competition. I wish him the best though, Eurogenes is pretty legit it just needs to be comercialized.... global 25 is kind of flimsy and amateur looking (not marketed well) even though Davidski probably knows his DNA stuff very well........
It needs an entire website, not just some blogspot site and a paypal account
Definitely outdated in many respects. Reminds me of like the late 90's XD

This happened just after they launched FF, so they probably still made tweaks. These companies make always tweaks, because autosomal dna is not a piece of cake. For example I have very looong IBDs with Latvians giving false results, but they obviously delete them in a standard process.

This is fascinating. My top outlier sample is figured as Finnic Sarmatian. Even though it is in my rank 142th, this is really strange, because she/he was probably an adopted child in a Merovingian burial.
142. Finnic Sarmatian Warrior (605 AD) ..... 18.64 - NS12a - ?
Culture: MerovingianThe Alemanni were a confederation of Germanic tribes located in the Upper Rhine basin. With the defeat of the Alemanni by Clovis I of the Franks in 497 AD, Alamannia became a Duchy of the Merovingian Kingdom. Integration between the Alemanni and Franks from the 5th to 8th century AD was reflected in the changed burial practices and richly furnished graves of the ruling families (Adelsgrablege). The splendor of these graves depicted the family structure, wealth, and status of the familia and also the power of the Franks. The 7th century Alemannic burial site at Niederstotzingen in southern Germany was used from 580 to 630 AD and rerepresents the best preserved example of such an Alemannic Adelsgrablege. Discovered in 1962, 13 human skeletal remains (10 adults and 3 infants - seemingly all male), along with a varied assemblage of weapons, armor, jewelry, equestrian gear, and remains of three horses, were excavated from 12 graves. The grave goods indicated contacts with Byzantines, Lombards, and Franks.
These remains are of an exotic warrior from the East who has some Finnic and Sarmatian elements.

IDK. I have around 3600 non-Finnish matches, up to 60 cM, mostly from USA and Sweden, but I can't identify all. Surnames can be from Russia to Italy. The rest of all 10000 matches I can identify Finnish of partly Finnish.

Yeah, genetic distances give misleading results to mixed people, but if the distance figures admixtures, like a+b, the result can be correct. But admixture tests can give false results too. Admixture results depends on the used reference bundle. So getting things right calls always brain work. For example for me admixture tests give results between 100% Finnish to 40% Finnish + 60% German and all testers believe that their tests are scientifically perfect. All depends on methods
- using IBD's give different results than using allele distributions and again using autosomal haplotypes gives different results
- using different IBD cutoffs give different results
- additionally some commercial players fine tune results and in some cases the result can become even worse

sharing snps- actually identical parts of the dna
longest snp- the longest consequtive chunk of dna you share with that sample, that's more likely to be a real match than the ones which you share many small chunks with.
genetic closeness - you have similar k15 results.

sharing snps- actually identical parts of the dna
longest snp- the longest consequtive chunk of dna you share with that sample, that's more likely to be a real match than the ones which you share many small chunks with.
genetic closeness - you have similar k15 results.
Thanks for explanation.
What do you think, why do I have so many samples here, and other members not?

Weired thing is that V11P is closest to modern Hungarians, not what I would expect from a Viking sample.

7. Avar (590 AD) ..... 12.03 - ?
Top 98 % match vs all users
After 568 AD the nomadic Avars settled in the Carpathian Basin and founded their empire, which was an important force in Central Europe until the beginning of the 9th century AD. The Avar elite was probably of Inner Asian origin; its identification with the Rourans (who ruled the region of todays Mongolia and North China in the 4th-6th centuries AD) is widely accepted in the historical research. This sample is from a well-characterised Avar elite group of burials excavated in Hungary buried with high value prestige artifacts and their skulls showed Mongoloid morphological traits.

Actually I didn't have Avar dislplayed until the previous update came out, but it gives about 2 number closer compared to the other one. Iam not close to avars as pure population but Avar+Germanic/Gaul is 5. pretty close.

Is there significant genetic difference between east and west finland ? I know you guys speak swedish as a second language, because there is close connection to them on the west. I know two guys from koupio. Also heard that names ending with "nen" are eastern. Is there any significance of that?

Do you match with this one:
Finnic Sarmatian Warrior (605 AD)
the label(Sarmatian) must be wrong I assume
The Alemanni were a confederation of Germanic tribes located in the Upper Rhine basin.

It was general question, not for you of course. I just saw in your comment they added Rugii now so I had to quote it. But they should add some link to paper (I know it is impossible) if they assign such population for users as based on real genomes.
What else? Scirii, Bastarnae, Herulii? It's not even funny.

I't magic apaprently:)
But I guess all their Franks, Thuringii, Rugii are offshot of Baiuvar and Szolad samples. You know I made for fun PCA with modern clusters for those samples some time ago and yes, some cluster with NE French so they are Franks for MTA, some with central Germans so they are probably MTA's Thuringii... And so on... Problem is they were Baiuvars and Langobards.
The same is for those Vikings. Modern PCA (in K15) and they superimpose Sigtuna and medieval Icelandic academic vikings on modern Scandinavian clusters. No matter if it is real connection or not.

I don't pay too much attention to it. My sister and I got similar examples after she got her ancestry.com test results this past weekend. As for the Rugii, aren't they supposedly from SW Norway but migrated south as did many other Germanic tribes? My mother has much of her ancestry from that region.

Yes, but I asked from what study are Rugii samples.
So I guess judging from your mother example, they use for them those Szolad or Baiuvar samples which clustered near Norway... Very clever.
I'm waiting for creation of other Germanic tribes in such way:)

Has anyone see Thuringii, Proto-Hungarians, Oeselians, or Rugii as anyone's top population? These seem like the oddball ones.
Oeselians is on my top list with Vikings, some Germanic tribes, followed by Avars and Scyths.

It is coincidence between those North European groups, because their results are based on randomly survived IBD-segmens and distandes between ancient samples of low quality. Particularly, if your family is of mixed North European ancestry, your family will get imprecise results.

I agree, especially for Americans. Even though I'm in a relatively homogenous part of the USA, I'm a mix of northern european populations. Mostly Danish, northern German and Norwegian.

Yeah, I consider it inaccurate for people of mixed European ancestry. Even my mom had weird results for being fully Irish. Had her closest to Danish Vikings and Danes for modern populations.

They have not proper Irish samples. Another thing is that so called Jutes, despite the fact that they are considered as a Germanic tribe, had Celtic background. We can't straightforwardly equate ancient and modern people.

DNA Spotlight
Hrafna-Flóki's Vilgeršarson's Expedition
excerpt:
located in Vatnsdalur (VDP) near Flóki's first settlement Vatnsfjöršur in the Westfjords of Iceland and date to this early settlement period. A wealthy Nordic Viking woman (VDP-A5) was buried with her boat and later six more individuals were buried alongside her. The others were typical Icelandic males being part Norse and part Gaelic. The gravesite included a silver Thor's hammer, jewelry, 30 beads, a knife and a near eastern coin dating from as early as 870 AD. The items seen here from this boat burial can be seen in the National Museum in Reykjavik. Not far to the south in Öndveršarnes the last sample shown DKS-A1 was found buried with a sword, a spearhead, a knife, shield-boss, bone-pin and fragments of iron.

Hrafna-Flóki's Vilgeršarson's Expedition
data slide
A Norseman from West Norway named Naddošr was en-route to the Faroe Islands and got lost accidentally landing in Iceland - seeing no signs of life and the snow falling, he named this land Snęland (snow land). Around the same period, a Swedish Viking named Garšarr Svavarsson was on his way to the Hebrides islands to claim an inheritance. He had difficulty navigating the Orkney islands and ended up drifting to Iceland. Instead of making landfall, he circumnavigated Iceland to discover this piece of land was indeed an island and spent the winter in a northern bay he called Hśsavķk (house bay). After returning to Norway stories were told of Garšarr's adventures. Hrafna-Flóki Vilgeršarson decided he would be the first Viking to head to Iceland and settle it.
