View Full Version : Have I likely found my surname?!?

So my FTDNA Y37 results are in! At 37 markers there are no close matches (only genetic distance of 4 and one at 3) but at 25 there are some close matches and at 12, well it's basically useless at 12.

Anyways, at 37 and 25 markers I have a bunch of matches who have the same surname as each other and also have the same YDNA haplogroup that 23andMe gave me (FTDNA only gave me a very general one, 23andMe was more specific).

I recognized that the people who all had one surname seem to share a common ancestor in the early 1700s on their family trees. I have some of them as matches on my family finder as well (though, not close matches) and I checked 23andMe and I have matches with the same surname on there as well! It's not a super common surname like "smith" or something but it is English.

Is it likely I've found people with a common paternal ancestor and identified my surname?

It's possible but even at 37 makers is iffy tbh. 67 or 111 would seal the deal. Anyway good luck. I'm also trying to find our real paternal surname also.

That's a shame. I thought maybe with the multiple matches and matches on 23andme etc that it was alright but yeah. Damn shame, I haven't learned anything at all from the test then, really. There's so many names that match more distantly, it could be anything

Do they only focus on Y-DNA with the 37? Or would they give me ancestry raw data with my y-37 as well?

No, it's just Y-DNA. It's expensive for what it is, I know. But its the best YDNA test there is, still. I learned nothing from mine, lol.

I had an exact match at Y-37 and it disappeared at Y-67 completely. I wouldnt believe anything at Y-37. Propably only if the two individuals share a surname.

You don't think matching with people from that same paternal line on Family Finder and 23andMe lends any credence to it?
