View Full Version : Why do Scythian samples found in Ukraine (and EE in general) plot European?

Shouldn't they plot majority Iranic?
When did the Scythians became predominantly European? Were they ever Iranic, or only had Iranic nomadic culture?

I don't hold the view Scythians were predominantly Iranic. There is a huge slav component that everyone ignores.

West Scythians plot with Germans because they mixed with Goths & others.
Black Sea Scythians plot with Ukrainians because they mixed with Slavs.
Siberian Scythians plot with Kazakhs because they mixed with East-Eurasians.
etc.

what's Iranic? modern Iranians? both Iranians ad Scythians originated somewhere in modern day Kazakhstan, migrated in different directions and mixed with different native populations. both lost their proto-Iranic genetics.

I don't care about modern Iranic.

But I'm interested to find out whether Scythians living in present day Ukraine 2500 years ago were mostly Iranic or European.

They were sintashta. Who were genetically very related to the Yamnaya people but had some kind of southern shift probably a little more Caucasian input. Iranic is european. Todays Iranian speakers are obviously too mixed with the local populations from the areas that the original Iranic people migrated to, to be considered true “Iranic”.

My belief is that Slavs are the closest to this ancient Iranic type. There are many Iranic cognates in Slavic that isn’t just explained by the Scythian influence.

No cause Iranian peoples mixed with natives of the lands they came too, the Scythians where basically the heirs of the indo-europeans

they can be modelled as Bronze age Hungarians, which were pretty similar to modern Hungarians + something more eastern, Sarmatian like.

Genetically, maybe, linguistically barley, Balto-Slavic and Indo-Iranian are closer too each other then any other but still very distant

Just because they plot close to Slavs doesn't mean Iranic ancestors were Slavs. Also Slavs differ greatly in terms of CHG ancestry.

When did the Scythians became predominantly European? Were they ever Iranic, or only had Iranic nomadic culture?

But they do. Nevermind the Asiatic Saka , even the European Volga river Scythian is 2/3 E. Iranic + 1/3 NE European. If you’re talking about the Hungarian samples then those are not pure Scythian IMO

But they do. Nevermind the Asiatic Saka , even the European Volga river Scythian is 2/3 E. Iranic + 1/3 NE European. If you’re talking about the Hungarian samples then those are not pure Scythian

he asked about the Scythians from Ukraine. they were genetically right between this one and the Hungarian ones.

These lines say that Tajiks and Afghans genetically approached the Scythians in the Middle Ages, when they received an East Asian admixture (which is lacking in other Eastern Europeans) from the Turks and Mongols.
Plus, the Scythians had some West Asian admixture, which they possibly received from the Caucasians and after the raids in western Asia. It also contributed to similar genetics.
Thus, Tajiks, Afghans and Scythians are close mainly accidentally due to the same admixtures, but obtained at different times and in different places. Such models do not make sense without a historical context.

Well my opinion is and from certain others is that Slavs are actually Scythians or where a part of them. One guy told me "how come were the scythian culture declined the so called slavs appeard"? This made me think ecpecially since politics play a huge part of east europe. Or whatever is a "SLAV" linguistically yes but genetically i have some other opinion.

Look at me for a example i did a whole genome sequencing and guess what, a good chunk of Scythian ancestry came out and only around 2 Percend Slav or whatever they view as "SLAV".
I think something is being hidden when it comes to the topic of Scythians.

I think a general debate should be held maybe a new thread around that topic would be interesting since Scythians are quite fascinating/mysterious bunch.

Slavic invasion of the Balkans described as a Scythian desert by Byzantium historians and Sklaveni/slavs as Scythians
but then again they called Sklaveni Geti-Thracians they are confusing :lightbul:
