The study offers a remarkable interdisciplinary analysis of Avar-period communities in the Vienna Basin, focusing on the cemeteries at Leobersdorf (LEO), Mödling (MGS), Csokorgasse (CSK), and two earlier sites, Mödling-Leinerinnen (MLE) and Mödling-Lerchengasse (MLS). The research integrates genetic, archaeological, and anthropological data from 722 newly analyzed ancient genomes, presenting a detailed portrait of the cultural and genetic diversity during this period.

Genetic Disparity Between Neighboring Sites

1. Leobersdorf (LEO):
- Ancestry: Predominantly East Asian (~71.5%), supplemented by Pontic steppe (up to 61.4%) and minor pre-Avar European ancestry. This composition was consistent over six generations, highlighting long-term genetic continuity and limited intermarriage with neighboring European-like communities.
- Haplogroups:
- Male individuals predominantly carried Y haplogroup C2b, associated with East Asian populations.
- Female mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) was diverse, indicating exogamous marriages with women from other regions.
- Samples and Dating: 155 samples were analyzed from 181 identified burials (7th–9th century CE). The well-preserved skeletal remains allowed for high-resolution DNA recovery, with 139 individuals included in a reconstructed six-generation pedigree.
- Location: LEO lies in the Vienna Basin, approximately 20 km from Mödling. It remained genetically linked to Avar core areas in Hungary rather than nearby Mödling.

2. Mödling (MGS):
- Ancestry: Primarily European-like with minimal East Asian admixture (<5%). This community formed a genetic cluster resembling modern Europeans, with links to earlier pre-Avar populations in the region (MLE, MLS).
- Haplogroups:
- Y haplogroups included R1a and R1b, which are common in Europe.
- mtDNA was varied, reflecting female mobility and admixture across regions.
- Samples and Dating: 485 samples were analyzed from 536 identified individuals (7th–8th century CE). Pedigrees reconstructed for 356 individuals spanned multiple generations, demonstrating strong kinship networks and social cohesion.
- Location: Located near Leobersdorf, Mödling exhibited a distinct genetic identity despite shared cultural practices with LEO.

3. Csokorgasse (CSK):
- Ancestry: Individuals displayed genetic profiles similar to Mödling, with minimal East Asian admixture (median ~6.6%). No evidence supported an eighth-century Eastern genetic influx as hypothesized by archaeologists.
- Samples and Dating: 83 samples were analyzed from a cemetery of 745 graves (7th–9th century CE).
- Location: Situated along the Danube, CSK revealed extensive genetic ties to Mödling, suggesting frequent interactions between these communities.

4. Earlier Pre-Avar Sites (MLE and MLS):
- Ancestry: These sites predate Avar rule, showing European genetic profiles consistent with Iron Age and late Roman populations.
- Samples and Dating: Seven samples were analyzed—five from Mödling-Leinerinnen (6th century CE) and two from Mödling-Lerchengasse (4th century CE)—providing valuable context for comparison with Mödling and Leobersdorf.

Cultural and Genetic Practices

1. Reproductive Strategies and Kinship:
- Both LEO and MGS avoided inbreeding, achieved through female exogamy, with women marrying into other communities.
- Patrilineal and patrilocal structures were dominant:
- At LEO, 88% of males shared the same Y haplogroup (C2b), emphasizing male lineage continuity.
- At MGS, patrilineality was less pronounced (70%), reflecting greater social flexibility.
- Multi-reproductive unions (e.g., levirate marriages) were common, particularly at MGS, where widows frequently remarried within the same family to maintain social cohesion.

2. Long-Term Genetic Barriers:
- Despite their proximity, LEO and MGS maintained distinct genetic identities over 150 years. LEO had more genetic ties to distant Avar centers (e.g., Danube–Tisza Interfluve) than to nearby Mödling.

3. Cultural Similarities Despite Genetic Differences:
- Both sites shared common funerary practices typical of the Avar realm (e.g., inhumation in west–east graves, multi-partite belt sets, modest female jewelry).
- MGS exhibited more frequent and higher-quality grave goods, such as pottery and glass-beaded necklaces, indicating subtle cultural variations.

IBD Networks and Regional Connections

1. Intra- and Inter-Site Genetic Ties:
- Within sites, genetic connections were dominated by male-to-male links due to patrilocality.
- Between sites, higher female-relatedness connections indicated women moved between communities to form marriage alliances.

2. Long-Distance Links:
- LEO individuals had stronger genetic connections to Avar heartland sites (e.g., Kunszállás in Hungary) than to Mödling or Csokorgasse, reflecting broader Avar marital networks.

3. Social Status and Genetic Relatedness:
- Prestigious grave goods (e.g., belt sets for men, coat clasps for women) correlated with higher genetic connectivity, underscoring the role of kinship in societal hierarchy.

Community Development Over Generations

1. Settlement Patterns:
- Both LEO and MGS began as small settlements in the late 7th century, expanding into structured communities dominated by large kinship networks by the 8th century.

2. Demographic Trends:
- Peak burials occurred in the 4th and 5th generations, followed by a decline in the 6th generation, likely due to the Frankish conquest in the 790s CE.
