View Full Version : Reconstructing Roma History from Genome-Wide Data..
http://www.plosone.org/article/info%3Adoi%2F10.1371%2Fjournal.pone.0058633
The Roma people, living throughout Europe and West Asia, are a diverse population linked by the Romani language and culture. Previous linguistic and genetic studies have suggested that the Roma migrated into Europe from South Asia about 1,000–1,500 years ago. Genetic inferences about Roma history have mostly focused on the Y chromosome and mitochondrial DNA. To explore what additional information can be learned from genome-wide data, we analyzed data from six Roma groups that we genotyped at hundreds of thousands of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). We estimate that the Roma harbor about 80% West Eurasian ancestry–derived from a combination of European and South Asian sources–and that the date of admixture of South Asian and European ancestry was about 850 years before present. We provide evidence for Eastern Europe being a major source of European ancestry, and North-west India being a major source of the South Asian ancestry in the Roma. By computing allele sharing as a measure of linkage disequilibrium, we estimate that the migration of Roma out of the Indian subcontinent was accompanied by a severe founder event, which appears to have been followed by a major demographic expansion after the arrival in Europe.
Not allot of surprise here, i am hoping these samples can be included in Eurogenes in the near future:)

Previous linguistic and genetic studies have suggested that the Roma migrated into Europe from South Asia about 1,000–1,500 years ago. Historical studies have suggested that the Roma are originally from India, and that they migrated to Europe between the 5th and 10th century [3]. It has been argued that their migration route included Persia, Armenia, Anatolia, and Greece [3], [4].
And yet we keep seeing some Balkanites here, speaking nonsense like "Turkey should take the responsibility of gypsies they brought here in Ottoman era and get them back", at least once in every month.
A historically informative insight from our analysis is the date of the West Eurasian gene flow into Roma. Using a statistic that captures the pattern of admixture related linkage disequilibrium; we estimate that the admixture between Roma and West Eurasians occurred 29±2 generations or about 780–900 years ago. The earliest records of the arrival of Roma in the Balkans dates back to the 11th–12th century [3], which is concordant with our estimated date of mixture [3].
So, Balkanites and Gypsies are getting intermarried for at least 900 years.

Yes, the biggest non-South Asian component seem to be mostly Balkan and Eastern European, this is also mirrored in my grandmothers genetic matches in the Balkan.
David got back to me about using them in Eurogenes, apparently they wount let anyone use the samples unless its a formal study :(

Interesting it says roma is nw indian and most related to kashmiri pandit and punjabi. And have east european admixture

Do you have cousins from India over at 23andme? surely you must have a few.. My grandmother have a few, one whom is public is from Pune, which is Western India, but i am unsure which ethnic group he belongs to, or if Pune is his ancestral home region or something more recent, another cousin has a mtDNA linage that is found mainly in Eastern India.. My own Indian cousin/s are now anonymous (Used to be public) so i dont know where in India their origin lie, but one had a surname that seems to be connected to the Brahmin caste, i also had a large Segment match with a Tharu person from Northern India (Uttar pardesh)....

As I've said, Kashmir is the gypsy urheimat and where they should go, like the Jews and Palestine.

northwest india seems like the Urheimat of gypsies but i dont see why they should go there when they are out of that Region since 1.500 years and live now since 1000 years in europe. and not all jews live in Israel many live in the USA and europe and australia and have no Intention to go to israel

But they're not in Europe where they were unwelcome. See the point? America wanted Jews. Russia, for instance, did not.

So gypsies are a result of mixing Asians with Europeans?
What's gonna come out of French Africans, Aliens?

None at all? how about anonymous RF cousins with South Asian mtDNA or YDNA linages?

didnt looked too much into this, but i have only 1 relative on Ancestry Finder from southasia and that only at 1gp, meaning one of his grandparents are from bangladesh but the 3 others are from somewhere else. so that doesnt tell much if we are related via the southasian line.

Ok, its not that hard to spot obvious South Asian cousins in RF...you can use this tool to figure out where the various mtDNA linages come from:
