I suspect there is quite a large autosomal variation in Austria, from West to East, so unfortunately the G25 average may not capture quite a few Austrians. I believe Noricum represents an eastern Austrian, in fact nobody would blink an eye if he claimed he was Hungarian, based on how he usually scores. We need an Austria_West and an Austria_East, imo.

Does she get any French ancestor locations in 23andme? I have a significant amount of southwest German ancestry and can often be modeled as 40-50% French/Belgian on G25, and I’m wondering if it reflects genuine French ancestry especially if I get locations for it in 23andme. (I had many non-paternity events in my family so there are a lot of question marks)

No, she did not get any French ancestor locations. But like you she can be modeled as significantly French/Belgian. Besides Western and Southern German, my mother has an English great-grandparent and distant Prussian ancestry.

Yes, I get a high likelihood for Grand-Est, Normandy and Hauts-de-France. Not sure who in my family was French, but my paternal aunt gets a good amount of French when modeling her G25 coordinates so I’m assuming it came from my paternal grandma’s estranged biological father.

Here is a good run for my aunt and I. I used an individual Belgian sample because the others inflate my British and Jewish ancestry and underestimate my French/German side (I get about 50% on 23andme which sounds about right).

sure, but the interesting implication that I had in mind is that there could be some overlap or at least closeness even between Romanians and Austrians xD which to some would sound unexpected.

then, regional sampling would be best for bigger populations, a Romanian average is less relevant than at least a Transylvania/Moldova/Wallachia would be
