Eating lots of meat and cheese in middle age is as deadly as smoking, according to scientists.

A study of thousands of men and women aged 50-plus found that those who ate the most animal protein were almost twice as likely to die early as those who ate low amounts.

They were also more than four times as likely to be killed by cancer – a figure comparable to smoking.
The researchers blame the protein found in meat, cheese, eggs and other animal products for feeding tumours and fuelling the ageing of the body’s cells.

They recommend that those in their 50s and early 60s cut back on these products – and instead get their protein from fish, beans and lentils.

The findings are likely to horrify scores of slimmers who follow popular high-protein diets, such as Atkins and Dukan.

However, the good news is that the restrictions don’t last forever – as the study also showed eating protein was beneficial to the over-65s. In other words, while you may have to deny yourself during your working life, you can enjoy meat treats in retirement to prevent frailty.

The US researchers recommend that someone who is aged 50 to 65 and weighs around nine stone should limit themselves to just 45g of protein a day – the equivalent of two pork chops.

British experts, however, questioned the findings and said the best way of warding off cancer is to not smoke, keep to a healthy weight, drink in moderation and keep active.

The study follows numerous warnings about the dangers of eating red meat and processed meat.
Professor Valter Longo, of the University of Southern California, compared the diets of almost 6,400 Americans with their health over the next 18 years.

The data from a US government health survey showed a clear link between a high protein diet – defined as one in which at least a fifth of calories come from protein – and an early grave.

But even a moderate amount of protein, making up 10 to 19 per cent of calories, was also dangerous.
Those with this type of diet were three times as likely to die of cancer as those who ate less.

The average Briton gets around 15 per cent of calories from protein, and so falls into this category.
Protein was also linked to deaths from diabetes, the journal Cell Metabolism reports.

The researchers said plant-based proteins, such as those from beans, appeared to be beneficial and the outcomes were not linked to the amount of fat or carbohydrate in the diets – so they believe animal protein was to blame.

They also showed that cancer found it easier to take root and grow in mice on a high-protein diet.
Professor Longo said: ‘Almost everyone is going to have a cancer cell or pre-cancer cell in them at some point. The question is: “Does it progress?” Turns out one of the major factors in determining it is protein intake.’

It is thought protein does the damage by fuelling a hormone called IGF1.
This helps our bodies grow, but may also feed cancer and accelerate ageing.
Professor Longo recommends that people of all ages get the bulk of their protein from fish, beans and lentils.

He suggests that those aged 50 to 65 eat just 0.36g of protein per pound of body weight per day.
This works out as 45g a day for someone who is nine stone and around 60g for someone who is 12 stone.
However, the low-protein diet need not be forever. The study found that while protein is dangerous in middle age, it is good for health later in life.

Those aged over 65 who ate the most protein were 28 per cent less likely to die over the course of the study than those who ate the least. Moderate amounts of protein were also beneficial.
It is thought this is because the older body finds it harder to absorb protein and so more is needed to prevent frailty.
Levels of IGF1, the suspect hormone, also fall with age.
With this in mind, the professor recommends that pensioners up their intake to 0.55g of protein per pound of body weight per day.
He also stresses that people should not make extreme changes that lead to them losing weight or becoming malnourished.

This is due to the carbs, not the protein.

Yeah, because smoking isn't really that dangerous.

This is propaganda as part of the war on healthy eating and eating for highest thought process and energy.

It is no wonder they want everyone to be a bunch of celery stick chomping, cloudy-headed, emotional creatures without a backbone.

It's so ingrained into most people's psyches.

When you hear someone say "what is a healthy meal?" or "what are foods you would eat more of while on 'a diet'"?"...well, what comes to mind? Fruits and veggies probably come to mind, and usually a decrease of meat.

Here's the shocker: Not everyone has the same dietary needs. I don't agree with EVERY detail of the eat-for-your-blood-type literature, but they are correct in the basic sense that different blood types actually mean something- and individuals with them have different needs.

Not everyone should be eating a whole mess of veggies, nor huge slabs of red meat daily.

Animal protein is required in everyone, though and is the best source for b12. There are no substitutes.

You might be hardwired to do best on chicken, along with fairly generous greens (A component), and can tolerate dairy well and do well on grains (B component). Not sure what the literature thinks about that. Might benefit from a diet including those often.

In regards to diet, rh factor only modifies needs to the extent of protein-needs. Negatives seem to need a little more protein.

Although meat is important for health, there are other factors that make it unhealthy:

Recent Study Finds Red Meat Associated with Improved Mental Health

Interestingly enough, another recently published Australian studyix concluded that women who avoid red meat appear to be at increased risk of clinical depression. Women consuming less than the recommended amount of red meat were twice as likely to have a diagnosed depressive or anxiety disorder as those consuming less than the recommended amount. Eating very high amounts of red meat was also associated with increased rates of depression.

The researchers suggest a moderate amount of lean red meat—about three to four 6-8 ounce servings per week—may actually be important for mental health. However, they also recommend being careful with the type of meat you choose.

    Healthy versus Unhealthy Meats

Many people are still in the dark about the vast differences between concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs) and organically-raised, grass-fed beef, both in terms of nutrient content and contamination with veterinary drugs, genetically modified organisms, and disease-causing pathogens.
Most CAFO cows are fed grains (oftentimes genetically engineered grains, which make matters even worse), when their natural diet is plain grass. This difference in the animals' diet creates vastly different end products.

Modern mass production of food has created a wide array of safety problems. In fact, once you delve into the world of the food industry, it becomes clear that eating much of it is like playing a game of Russian roulette with your health.

One problem in particular, which relates to the issue of meat, is the issue of contamination with hormones, antibiotics, and pesticides. As much as 70 percent of all antibiotics used in the U.S. are for animals, primarily to serve as growth enhancers. The excessive use of antibiotics in agriculture is the primary reason for the rampant increase in antibiotic-resistant disease in humans. As for pesticides, most people do not realize that conventionally-raised meat is actually one of the primary sources of pesticide exposure—not fruits and vegetables! This due to the fact that CAFO animals are raised on a diet consisting primarily of grains, which are of course sprayed with pesticides.

    Hormones
Most traditionally raised beef calves go from 80 pounds to 1,200 pounds in a period of about 14 months. This is no natural feat. Along with enormous quantities of grain (usually corn) and protein supplements, calves are fed or implanted with various drugs and hormones to, as the beef industry says, "promote efficient growth."

Any combination of the natural hormones estradiol, progesterone, and testosterone, and the synthetic hormones zeranol and trenbolone acetate may be given to cattle. Another hormone, melengesterol acetate, may also be added to feed to "improve weight gain and feed efficiency."

Measurable amounts of hormones in traditionally raised beef are transferred to humans, and some scientists believe that human consumption of estrogen from hormone-fed beef can result in cancer, premature puberty and falling sperm counts.

    Antibiotics
About nine million pounds of antibiotic feed additives are used annually in the cattle-raising process. Many people don’t realize that the largest use of antibiotics in the United States is to feed to animals, often so that they will gain more weight, but also to prevent disease outbreaks that could easily fester since the animals are raised in such crowded conditions.

This routine antibiotic use is contributing to the growing problem of antibiotic resistance in humans. Animals raised in natural environments, not the traditional "factory farms," rarely require antibiotics. You may be able to find antibiotic-free beef in your local health food store, but be sure to be certain that it is grass-fed as well.

    Irradiation

Some commercial beef is irradiated, which means it has been treated with gamma rays produced by the radioactive material, cobalt 60, or electricity to kill bacteria. The effects of long-term consumption of irradiated food products remain to be seen.

This issue is virtually the same issue as with milk. Once milk is pasteurized to "protect" us, it is seriously damaged and actually causes more harm than good for most who drink it. However, if milk is consumed in its real raw form, then it is typically an amazing health-producing food for most who consume it.

Many may not be aware that school districts have the option of purchasing irradiated beef for their lunch programs, and parental notification is not required. If you are a parent you can work with your school district to discourage the use of irradiated foods, or at the very least contact them to find out whether irradiated beef is being served in your child’s school cafeteria.
