Many of the small countries in the list have been there for centuries and will just continue to be. Believing they will not is just as random as believing large ones will not. Many of the large countries of the past we can think of exist no more.

I admit, though, that not all of them have always been wealthy countries. Andorra has been seen as a rural place during most of its long history. And centuries ago people laughed about rural countries like Sweden with its tree-fellers. So all these things are prone to change.

The study is mainly but not only based on economic facts, though.

Hasn't the EU said that Scotland or Catalonia should have to apply to be absorbed by the EU? So it looks like rather a fast way to get out of it.
