Default The Mysterious Carnival of Venice

    Carnevale di Venezia

The Carnival of Venice (Italian: Carnevale di Venezia) is an annual festival, held in Venice, Italy.

It is said that the Carnival of Venice was started from a victory of the "Serenissima Repubblica" against the Patriarch of Aquileia, Ulrico di Treven in the year 1162.
In the honor of this victory, the people started to dance and make reunions in San Marco Square.

Apparently, this festival started on that period and became official in the Renaissance.

In the seventeenth century, the baroque carnival was a way to save the prestigious image of Venice in the world.

Today, approximately 3 million visitors come to Venice every year for the Carnival.

One of the most important events is the contest for la maschera pi bella ("the most beautiful mask")
placed at the last weekend of the Carnival and judged by a panel of international costume and fashion designers.

I like the doll she is carrying in her silk-gloved hand,
dressed in the same style of costume, mask, and floral hat, as the lady herself is wearing.

Wow, great stuff. I wonder how long it takes to make those costumes? I also wonder if they are made by big companies or small family firms. Italy still has a lot of vibrant family-owned businesses I understand.

I'd like to think that small family firms are still making these traditional beautiful costumes, but I'm not sure. Venetians could shed some more light and knowledge on this question.

I have always had a bit of fascination with different types of masks. Looks really cool. Thanks for sharing the pics.
