    I was considering including the South African Apartheid regime, but I'm not sure if it could exactly be classified as "US-backed", as such.

    If you include the Apartheid regime it'll show a profound misunderstanding of what "backed" means.

    All this dictators were better than communist goverments, communism was violent too (Cuba coordinated several attemps to overthrow goverments, comme volunteers attacked Haiti,Nicaragua,and many more)
    Economically they wered bad but at least respected the traditions and lifestyle of their populations.
