I don't think anyone doubts that the net has not only become a cool and useful tool to learn and meet people, but it's also a place where hate speech and crime can escape the controls of our police forces.

I was somehow angry about this just now. Having sexual abuse be treated like nothing online, is something that shouldn't be tolerated.
So I just googled see what we're doing her in the UK cuz it's afterall the responsibility of govts to enact new laws to improve the control websites.

Can't wait to see those freaks that engage in hate speech online, be tracked down and fined heavily for spewing their nonsense. Will give us the chance to eliminate not only the Islamic nutters, but also all the racist, homophobic and anti-woman rubbish flying around.

It's not going to happen because people simply do not want it and there are laws protecting your private life. For example, a few attempts have been done to limit illegal downloading on music/films on the p2p networks but it has miserably failed as people get around. They just started using proxies. If you really want to shut down completely all these websites you may end up like North Korea where the network is disconnected from the outside.

I rather not. Can't trust the government with this one, especially since we've seen how corrupt the government is when it comes to civil liberties. Although the government might be monitoring people right now illegally (more probable in the U.S.).

One of my ex-boyfriends lived in Germany for a year, and he got fined for downloading illegaly a film. He learnt that internet providers must give all information about illegal downloads to the police forces. If it is possible to track something so unimportant as film downloads, I'm sure the means to follow dangerous and hateful people can be found as well.

The proposal in the UK is a good start. Some of the people in the HFC are very libertarian and complaining about this, but I personally see no problem with it.
