I don't think that Paganism was ever lost. It just survived in various cultural and spiritual traditions that were "Christianized". What they "discovered" after the Renaissance was not Paganism but merely the inversion of Christianity - taking whatever was in Christianity and flipping it, mixing it with Jewish Kabbala.
