Default Are generations long or short in your family?

I was born in the 1990s, my father was born in the 1950s and my paternal grandfather was born in... 1904 (!).

So, generations are long in my family. Also my father is the youngest of 5 brothers.

I was able to easily trace my direct paternal line back to year 1800 because it is only a few generations away.

Most of the women in my family live long and healthy lives, while most of the men die youngish (for example my grandpas died at 50 and 79). This is probably due to us guys being heavy drinkers and/or smokers - my grandpa who died at 79 had 6 or 7 heart attacks through-out his life and had a large portion of his heart removed in multiple surgeries.
It has made tracing my grandfathers' sides of the family challenging to say the least.

Pretty much the same as yours Peterski, most of my Great-Grandparents were born in the late 1800s.

Also because generations are long in my family, WW2 is not so far removed. So if people sometimes wonder why I have such strong opinions about Germany, Russia, etc. - it is because memories of WW2 are still very much alive in my family. For example my paternal grandfather's first wive was murdered in KL Auschwitz, and then he married again (I'm descended from his 2nd wife).

My paternal grandfather's brother, a merchant from Gdynia, was also murdered in Operation Tannenberg:

Also in September-October 1939 my grandfather fought against both the Red Army and the Wehrmacht.

My mother's uncle on the other hand fought in the battle of Bzura.

There is variation depending on the side of my family.

    Father: 1945 - present
    Mother: 1977 - present

    Paternal grandfather: 1916 - 1947
    Paternal grandmother: 1916 - 1986

    Maternal grandfather: 1949 - present
    Maternal grandmother: 1952 - 2012

My paternal great grandparents were born in the mid to late 1800s. My maternal great grandparents were also born in the late 1800s, with the exception of one great grandmother born in the early 1900s.

I was born in the 90s, my parents were born in the late 50s and early 60s. My paternal grandfather was born in 1920 and my grandma was born in 1931, both of my maternal grandparents were born in the 30s.

I think the generations were shorter for my great and great great grandparents, one paternal great great grandfather was born in the 1890's.
