Beautiful words in old Catalan from the king James I the Conqueror:

^ If only James knew what his idea of Espanya has become...

One Gallo-Romance word I can think of right now:

SUBINDE "OFTEN" > a sobén (Aragonese), sovint (Catalan), sovent (Occitan), souvent (French), sovan (Arpitan), sovens (Piedmontese), savens (Romansh)

^ (If the word exists in Portuguese, Spanish, Italian, Sardinian or Romanian, let me know!)

Also the word for ''butterfly'' is quite similar in all galloromance languages...

There's also some Gallo-Romance languages islands in Basilicata and Sicily, a reminder of the old conquests.. even there the language is very endangered by influence of standard Italian and local dialects, more than elsewhere, just like other similar "islands" of languages like Griko and Arbëresh are; I fear assimlation was always gonna happen eventually, since even other local languages have lost their original sound and often sound something quite Southern.. I promised myself that I would do a "report", when I'll be in Basilicata around these parts

Most people don´t know Catalan is Gallo-Romance and not Iberian. It´s a pain just to tell people Catalan is a language of its own

    Yes, that's another point.

The closest languages to catalan are gascon and languedocièn, two occitan dialects.

Well, I haven't met any educated people who think Catalan is not a language. However, I know many educated guys who really think the Romance languages in France and Italy are patois and dialetti, respectively. Or, in Iberia, Asturian and Aragonese. For these, this stigma will persist for a long while, they may even die with it. What is worse, many of the speakers of these languages even love to call them patois, unaware of or unconcerned about its derogative meaning.

Damn, how common is it? I have always heard spesso. It seems to be really kind of difficult to find a word that is shared by Catalan-Occitan, French-Arpitan and Rhaeto-Padanian but is not in Italian.
