"The smallest of the cities, the greatest of the capitals."

The town of Cangas de Onis was the capital of the Kingdom of Asturias until the year 774. In this town, well defended by mountains, the king Don Pelayo established his court, and from there began their attacks and expansion on the territories of northern Spain controlled by Moors.

Its no wonder why Spain is the most visited country in the world. Makes me feel sad that i never visited the country even once. The mountains and the greenery look very heavenly.

Central-Northern Spain is very beautiful indeed. South too but less
In fact, most of tourist prefer the South... beaches, climate, parties...

The yew (Texu in Asturian, Tejo in Spanish) is the sacred tree of the Asturian mythology, it represents the link with the Asturian people with the land and the old Pagan religion, the ancestors. Moreover, it is a tree of great religious significance, being placed next to many shrines, graveyeards and churches in Asturias. But it is also the tree of the darkness and death. Astur warriors took poison yew when being defeated as they prefered to die than being enslaved.

The yew symbolizes the passage to the Otherworld and so today this tree has a great importance in the celebrations of the Day of the Dead, where it is carried to the dead relatives a yew branch. The link between the yew and the world of the dead is recognized not only in Asturias but in other ancient Celtic lands like Britain and Ireland, where it was customary to plant yew trees in cemeteries instead of cypresses. Also among the Gauls the worship of this tree has been found in village settled by the Eburones, whose names means "the worshipers of the yew".

There are around 300 yew trees right near churches:

Spain is really an awesome country, deserves more than a visit, but the most visited country in the world is France (according to UNWTO).

The Picos de Europa is breathtaking, I really advise it, it's one of my favourite areas of the peninsula.

True, first place France, second place Spain (I think). But well, still impressive that a small country like Spain is one of the most visited countries in the world.

Asturias and its twin Cantabria are the most beautiful regions in Spain imo.
They combine the mountain with the coast, making them fabulous. And although its nature is what makes them amazing, it must not forget its architecture and other artistic heritage.
