14 July 2016, a 19 tonne cargo truck was deliberately driven into crowds celebrating Bastille Day on the Promenade des Anglais in Nice, France, resulting in the death of 85 people and injuring 307. The driver was Mohamed Lahouaiej-Bouhlel, a Tunisian resident of France.
18 July 2016, a 17-year-old refugee injured four people seriously, two critically, with a knife and hatchet on a train near Würzburg in Germany. The state office of criminal investigations called it a terrorist attack with an Islamist religious motive.
19 July 2016, a 37 year old Moroccan man stabbed a vacationing woman and her three daughters, aged 8, 12, and 14, while shouting “Allahu Akbar” in the village of Garda-Colombe near Laragne-Monteglin, in south-east France. Deputy mayor of Laragne-Monteglin in the Hautes-Alpes region, Jean-Marc Duprat, told local media the man was upset at the women for wearing shorts and T-shirts.
22 July 2016, a shooting occurred in the vicinity of the Olympia shopping mall in the Moosach district of Munich, Germany. Ten people, including the perpetrator, were killed and 36 others were injured. The shooting took place at a McDonald's restaurant near the shopping mall, in front of a Saturn electronics store nearby, and in the mall itself. The shooter, 18-year-old David Sonboly, son of Shiite Muslims from Iran, died nearby from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.
24 July 2016, fifteen people were injured, four seriously, in a suicide bombing outside a wine bar in Ansbach, Germany. The bomber, identified as Mohammad Daleel, was a 27-year-old Syrian refugee who had pledged allegiance to Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, leader of the Islamic State.
26 July 2016, two Islamist terrorists attacked participants in a Mass at a Catholic church in Saint-Étienne-du-Rouvray, Normandy, northern France. Wielding knives and wearing fake explosive belts, the men took six people captive and later killed one of them, 85-year-old priest Jacques Hamel, by slitting his throat and also critically wounded an 86-year-old man.
4 August 2016, a 64 year old American woman was killed and five others wounded in a knife attack at London's Russell Square. 19 year old Zakaria Bulhan, a Norwegian of Somali origin, carried out the attack and was arrested on the scene. The media initially linked the attack to terrorism, but later shifted its focus to possible mental disorders.
6 August 2016, a man attacked two policewomen with a machete while shouting "Allahu Akbar" in Charleroi, Belgium. The attacker, a 33-year-old Algerian living illegally in Belgium since 2012, was shot dead by another police officer.
