Maybe to you, but I'd guess him as Russian on the streets. He looks way more East Slavic than your father for example, whom you mentioned looking atypical for Moldovan, but I didn't agree with. Maybe we saw different pics.

A Moldovan sounding name (a few hundred carriers in the country according to Forebears) and a Ukrainian email address plus the results themselves suggest it.

Nah, my father really look very Russian, his features Russians find very familiar, paternal grandfather looks even more.

That guy looks pretty Eastern European too, I agree. Nothing Mediterranean or Zlatan-Ibrahimovic-like (or whatever an exaggerated Balkanoid person is supposed to look like). Neither stereotypically Romanian (not too familiar with Romanians in detail but I'm sure he's not the case).

Older or more old-fashioned Moldovans can have mail.ru and the likes, but if the address is Ukrainian then this is probably someone native to Ukraine, but obviously mixed.

I saw your results and photos on r/23andme. You look Russian af. Another good example for Aspirin, who daydreamed of villagers from Caplani, Stefan Voda to be like Ukrainians genetically due to how they looked. But nope, phenotype is more complex and cannot be explained accurately with autosomal DNA. I've got tens of examples from Moldova like that, and it's nice to see yet another one.

You are probably talking about your experience from abroad. I also lived in England for a couple of years and people there are just notoriously bad at guessing, especially considering that most don't know where Moldova is. I got guessed as everything under the sun personally.

If we were in Chisinau however, there obviously aren't any other Central Europeans here, so the closest population that I would associate with you is Russian. But there are certainly plenty of Moldovans with your look, and your case shows that one does not need to have any recent non-Moldovan ancestry for this phenotype to manifest itself. It's simply not among the most common ones.

On another note, you might not be aware that I have a thread on 23andme results from Moldova and Romania. You can check it out here. Bear in mind, however, that all those results are from the previous version of the algorithm, 5.2 (October 2019 to pre-October 2020). I think that you were tested on the current version, which is 5.9. I cannot see the new ones yet, as 23andme has not updated it for older chips like mine.
