Some patriotic propaganda is trying to put everything this way, but in reality only the military-industrial complex is well developed.
I'm not saying that we are a banana republic, but we can do much better. What worries me most is the lack of our own electronics, the almost ruined civilian aircraft industry and agriculture buying seeds in the West.
Well, own machine tools with the automotive industry, where can you go without them?. The list of industries artificially destroyed / restrained in development is quite large.
Yes, and reformed school and university education does not contribute to the appearance of geniuses in the required quantities.

Interesting. According to my dad, Russia always produced reliable machines and weapons, veicichles etc....And he said Russian engineers were very well educated and professional which means your schools were really good.
But, he claims what is worse in Russia than in west is quality of materials. He told me Russian products were made of inferior materials compared to western and that in this area they struggled.
That's his opinion as mechanical engineer. I don't know do you agree or not.
PS I am visiting Novosibirsk and Tomsk for business in May, can't wait to see Siberia!![]()

Russia has an excellent engineering school (Soviet), but the main difference from the West is that its main efforts are directed at anything but the civilian sphere. Your father is right about this.
In today's Russia, a young engineer often feels that the field of possible application of his knowledge is rather narrow, and is trying to work in the West. This is a problem, although in recent times there have been changes for the better.
I know that Russia can do much better, the potential of a Russian person is very high, but at the moment there are not enough conditions for its full disclosure.
I wonder what kind of "business" can you have in Tomsk?![]()
