I don't understand why that would be ironic. If Russia took Kyiv it wouldn't end the conflict. This isn't a video game where if you capture the capital you win the game. The goal is eastern Ukraine, and to undermine Ukraine's future military capabilities and NATO's presence in Ukraine (forcing Zelensky in writing to keep Ukraine out of NATO sphere of influence). Splitting your enemy's forces is basic military strategy 101.

Russians try to pin the most trained ukrainian force in the dombass while they took Kiev, Karkiv, Odessa and cut the ukrainian troops in dombass from the rest of Ukraine. Having thoses three major cities and isolate a big part of ukrainian army will have put an end to the war. The ukrainian government would have fall and Moscow would be in the best position to negociate everything they want.


In Dombass Russians mobilyze massively untrained locals with outdated mosin rifles. Thoses troop were literaly can fodders to keep bust the ukrainians. And they have suffer really heavy losses. Compare to the other frons where it was the VDV (elite troops) and a massive amount of armored vehicules.

The point is, russians failed. And as they can't admit it they invent this narrative that the primary goal was the dombass even if they just recently put the necessary amount of troops in this front to get some victory.


More time pass more ukrainians received weapons and volunteers. And more they get opportunity to train.
The best would have of course to put an end to the war as fast as possible. They didn't because they cannot.

This war should finish with a total annexation of south-east, demilitarization of central Ukraine which will become neutral state, what's gonna be with western Ukraine barely makes me care, it may go in any direction.

In the first phase of the war yeah, militia in dombass were widely use to fill the hole while the real attack was against the other big cities and a try to cut the dombass from the rest of ukraine.
