Modern Ukraine is just a huge historical territory, it's a big lies saying that territory of ex-USSR inhabited by homogeneous historical nation of Ukrainians. Me personally as Southern of Nikolaev (so called Mykolaiv) want just a separation, Russia does not need central Ukraine, after the war it should be a Ukrainian state, all the South-East should become Russia and it will forget the Ukrainism as a horror dream in 1-2 generations.

Ukrainians and Russians are almost impossible to distinguish for foreigners. Whenever I stumble upon some east Slavs in Zagreb I never know are they Russians or Ukrainians, except when they tell.

Contrast admixture. When a more dissimilar admixture, even in small quantities, takes your brother far away. Let's say 1000 years ago Russian Kiev was disconnected. Some went to the west, others went to the east. Agree, if you are 1/4 Romanian, will you be closer to eastern Europe than if you mix with the Finns, who (even a little) will take you significantly to the northeast? Even your genetic test is showing a typical genetic difference between Russians and Ukrainians. There's no way a Russian would be scoring the same West Med+East Med admixture as an average Ukrainian. Russians are pulled to the north (even Central Russians) due to a typical Baltic admixture as they didn't come to an empty land. Ukrainians are pulled to the South due to the absorption of local people. I think that difference is quite pronounced.
