Rusu is a common Romanian surname. I also used to have a Romanian co-worker named Sârbu, Mr 'Serbian'.

There's Vlach surname Serbul in my ancestral region which means the same. I wrote in Russian/Ukrainian transcription, but I think it's Sârbul originally.

Here it's considered to be extremely abnormal and not polite to speak non-Russian in public places, people will make remarks and reminders for this. Also, lots of people for example on phone say "I'm not alone, so I'm switching to Russian" already saying this phrase in Russian. Surely nobody kills for non-Russian language, but Russian is a must someway. Something like no one should speak something people around won't understand.

They either didn't care that much about language and were looking for an incentive to fight or it was racism against Slavic or eastern people in general since I doubt they would attack a Norwegian or Swedish or Dutch speaking their respective languages. I think it's the latter.

I'm sure they speak English well, this guy lived and worked there for years and we all (people below 35) speak English basically because it's learned in schools since early.

As you should be. You ignore the obvious: the antagonism itself wasn't over language. The language simply indicated he was a foreigner.

You think if they heard him speak English they'd be buddies? They'd still have a problem with him because he's a foreigner.

They were probably drunk and looking for an excuse. When I was a teenager, I had a few drunk adults try to pick a fight with me. They were drunk and angry. I happen to be passing by.

They recognized this guy was a foreigner and that was enough reason for them to go at him.
