What I mean by what I said is I used ancestry.ca to research family trees, which go surprisingly far back. I managed to trace some relatives back to the 1700s. But I will look into that, thanks.

Same applies to MyHeritage, and in fact a larger proportion of my relevant matches on MyHeritage have trees.

In addition to this, the surname "Grecu", meaning Greek, is the 60th most popular in Moldova. But it is unclear if it is tied to real medieval Greek settlers or people of any ethnicity who returned from Greek lands and received this nickname.
I didn't know that there have been many recent Greek settlers. Is this kind of ancestry more common in some specific region/microregion, or just random?

Usually it was found in Wallachian towns and especially Bucharest, but sporadically it was more prominent around Buzau area. Nowadays, it is mostly concentrated in Constanta and almost completely assimilated in Bucharest. There is one village Izvoarele that is 44% Greek nowadays. 150 years ago it was fully Greek.

Wow, I really had no idea. I would bet on the coastal part, but this Buzau is more hinterland, at least it seems to be on the map. Interesting. Is this also why Wallachians can plot more southern?

should also mention almost each village had a Greek landlord from 18th to mid 20th century in Wallachia and Moldova (at least West of Prut). Greeks ran the administrative affairs in place of our Ottoman masters. they took public office and religious higher ranks as well. a lot of Greek genes should have entered local pool back then, we know boyars were fcking village girls

Sorry, I always confuse the two. I meant Braila and not Buzau. It was the most important port in Wallachia from where trade with the Ottomans and the rest of the world was carried by sea. Greeks usually came through there here, and many chose to settle in that region. Dobrogea region at that point was not controlled by neither Wallachia nor Moldavia, so this was the coastal part.

Hello everyone, I'm back. I'll take it slow though, because life is quite busy right now.
