Sug I wasn't to post anything because I'm officially retired, but I think as both born, raised Catholic and educated in Catholic school and a Buddhist by choice I am uniquely qualified to answer your question. This has nothing to do with symbolism, as both Christ and Buddha stressed selfishness is the main reason of all that's not good in a man. Serving others is an antidote to selfishness. Doing things that make ego grow smaller is crucial to spiritual development. In other words selfishness is like a glass of muddy water, there is no clarity, service to others is the factor that settles the mud down and clears the water.
He is doing what any holy man is suppose to do. He leads by example. Those who tell you otherwise don't know shit about spirituality.
