Not only should citizens have guns to protect themselves from other citizens and non-citizens, they need guns to prevent corruption of their government, which is the primary reason for the second amendment. I say this despite having an uncle who died from a gun accident, and seeing my mother (and other family members) quite devastated over it. Guns are more useful than harmful in the long run, especially in a republic governing system.
Reasons for guns:
deterring tyrannical government;
repelling invasion;
suppressing insurrection;
facilitating a natural right of self-defense;
participating in law enforcement;
enabling the people to organize a militia system.
