I just finished watching The Punisher. It was alright. Some of the action scenes were good, but there was the scene where they ripped off Mad Max with his wife and son. What, since it's been almost thirty years they think that we won't notice that they're redoing a similiar movie plot line? Some of the scenes with Rebecca Romijn Stamos didn't feel right either. There was a scene where her voice was carrying a lot more emotion than her face did, which was sort of dumb. And the scene where he kills the main bad guy and all of the cars in the parking lot were blowing up in the shape of the Punisher insignia? Lame. Otherwise, the stunts were very good, and I liked the fact that they actually did real stunts and no CGI. CGI just seems so fake and cheesy to me. Give me real action and real stunts people! No fairy ass shit like in Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon. Old school action kicks major ass.

Haven't seen many movies lately, however did watch this last night:

Gran Torino

http://thefoodinista.files.wordpress.com/2009/06/gran_torino.jpg

Gran Torino is, in a way, a very similar film to Million Dollar Baby: a solid, well-executed and straightforward story, but without any twists or surprises at all. About 1/3 in, you can already see how the endgame will play out. However this didn't prevent me from enjoying it.

Eastwood's character is Walter Kowalski, a cantankerous, emotionally repressed war veteran, determined to remain the last man standing in an area otherwise being overrun by Asian immigrants. When he isn't mowing his lawn (no motorised lawnmower for him, of course) or tinkering around the house, he sits on his porch guzzling Pabst Blue and cursing the state of the neighbourhood. He hurls racial slurs left, right and center, and the only living being he shows any affection for is his fat, old yellow lab Daisy. This guy isn't Old Skool, he is f**king Kinderkarten.

Then things get interesting when the wimpy Asian kid from next door, who is being jumped into a gang, tries to steal his pride and joy: a 1972 Ford Gran Torino.

I suppose that one of the points that this film tries to make is that epithets like "polack", "spick", "mick", "gook" etc. shouldn't be taken too seriously, but rather as fairly harmless bantering, that can actually help people get along better. While I agree, it's a sad situation that our societies are so poisoned by political correctness that it needs to be made in the first place.

["kike" is conspicuously absent, though, hmmm ... ]

Apparently, all the Hmong characters are non-professionals, in front of the cameras for the first time. Unfortunately this shows.

Summa summarum: by no means essential Eastwood, but well worth watching, if you already haven't done so. Let us hope this doesn't turn out to be his swansong.

From what I hear, there's a lot of intertextuality in that movie. As it's usually the case with Tarantino's work. It's supposed to be a wink at those with an extensive history of film watching. Needless to say, if you're not versed in the directing styles of the 60s and 70s and the movies of that time, you will find Tarantino's craft flavorless. That's why I avoid his movies.

I want to further my studies in film. But, alas, I lack the time to do the required reading on film semiotics. For the time being then, let me be content with movies such as "The Dark Knight".

The Lion in Winter

A recent remake of the 1968 film; starring Patrick Stewart as Henry 11 and Glenn Close as Eleanor of Aquitaine. Set in the Christmas court of 1183 at Chinon the basic plot of the film is the feuding between Henry, Eleanor and their three sons Geoffrey, John (Lackland) and Richard (Lionheart), with the French King Philip Augustus playing Henry and his sons when he has the chance.

For what it is it’s not a bad film, I like psychological films as a rule and I was laughing through this even though it’s not technically a comedy. I thought Richard and John were portrayed somewhat inaccurately, Richard coming across as an oppressed homosexual with the social graces of a boar, in fact there is no evidence for Richard’s supposed homosexuality and he was a cultured man for the time. John comes across as a fool and a child, there is some evidence he was slightly autistic but he was manipulative, devious and highly intelligent (more than capable of pulling the wool over his brother’s eyes).

Keep in mind though that it was first conceived as a Broadway production, not a faithful historical record, and you need to exacerbate a character's personality or characteristics in order to add a dramatic effect.

I hope you've seen te 1968 version. Hepburn as Eleanor is a treat. "Hush, dear, Mummy's fighting."

Watched a couple of films this weekend:

Burn After Reading

http://www.canmag.com/images/front/movies20084/burn4.jpg

I've liked quite a few films by the Coen bros, but this one was a bit of a letdown. The usually always good John Malkowich has obviously been told to just play himself, and I'm not a huge fan of any other member of the star-studded cast. Confusing plot that goes nowhere, then abruptly just ends. Let's hope for better things to come -- maybe they'll try something new next time?

And ...

Män som hatar kvinnor ("Men Who Hate Women")

http://hd.se/multimedia/dynamic/00285/Pic_22_1_2009_42_48_285255d.jpg

In many ways a very typical Swedish detective/mystery flick, both in the pros and the cons: solidly made with convincing performances, but on ther other hand somewhat bland and politically correct.

However this one had a very odd undertone of all-round sexual sadism. The first half concentrates on an unsolved disappearance case from 40 years previously, and throws in three gratuitous rape/sexual abuse scenes just to keep things interesting.

The second half dives into full-on Silence of the Lambs territory, complete with gruesome autopsy pictures, etc. I guess the filmmakers knew that you can't go wrong with hideous, misogynistic torture and murder -- seeing as this has been a massive hit in the box office. :coffee:

I won't hold my breath for the next two installments.

Btw this was priceless:

Hollywood need to remake this ASAP

I am not very info foreign movies from such countries as London, Norway or Europe but I liked this one.

I was looking for a dubbed version but only found one with American subtitles.

I was not aware that they had Apple computers over there, the rape sequence blew me away and I did not see the twist coming.

Osobennosti natsionalnoy okhoty (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0114055/)

A Finn preparing a work on the Russian hunting traditions and customs, comes to Russia to collect materials and is invited to take part in a hunting party. His flamboyant companions include an Army general, with more than a passing resemblance to Aleksander Lebed, a police detective, local forest ranger (a devotee of Zen Buddhism) and some big-city types from St. Petersburg. Inevitably, their good intentions soon give way to endless drinking, visits to local farm girls and much else besides

Disney's "A Christmas Carol" , after Charles Dickens. This is a mixture of live actors and computer-generated animated characters. The story sticks very closely to Dickens and contains no glaring anachronisms. I could have done with less special effects, but I realise that this is the 21st century and most viewers expect them.

I found myself wondering for what audience it was intended. The ghost of Jacob Marley would, I think, be terrifying to small children. I should think that they would find the in-your-face special effects upsetting also. Overall, though, I think that it was a well-done successful setting of the Dickens tale.

The Road

*spoilers*

http://screenrant.com/wp-content/uploads/the-road-still-5.jpg

All in all a surprisingly faithful adaptation -- probably as good as can be hoped for. Still, the film falls flat in a couple of key scenes: the man and the boy escape from the road gang far too too easily, and the scene with the wrecked boat and the thief seem rushed.

Everybody will of course be waiting to see how the film manages the harrowing "house of horrors" scene, and it indeed doesn't pull any punches. On the other hand, the book's most horrifying scene of cannibalism is not included at all. Although according to imdb, the full-lenght director's cut will feature it.

Btw I loved the fact that this film premiered on Christmas day in this country, since it is indeed a perfect movie for the holidays -- since it describes a world where food, warmth, shelter and the goodwill of fellow men is but a distant memory. Ideal whether you love Christmas or hate it. ;)

It won't disappoint admirers of the novel (at least not too badly), and it also should work for people who haven't read it.

Excellent premise, rubbish execution. Started out decent then went so far fetched I expected Darth Vader to make a cameo appearance.

Amadeus.

A largely fictional account of the rivalry between Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Antonio Salieri. Pretty much a comedy (after all many of these people led such boring lives they are hardly the stuff of entertainment). Still enjoyable.

Stargate

It’s not a great film but the general premise is good and could be really good, far more believable than a lot of science-fiction films, which apart from Alien and Aliens generally suck.

G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra

http://images2.fanpop.com/images/photos/4000000/G-I-Joe-Rise-of-Cobra-upcoming-movies-4051178-1280-1024.jpg

I suppose that many male (and why not female too, I guess) Apricians my age watched this cartoon as kids. I remember even having some of the action figures (although my favorites were always Skeletor and the rest of the gang at Castle Greyskull).

I know I'm certainly not alone in this, but I always found it ridiculously fascinating how nobody ever died in that show. It documented the endless battle between a fanatical, murderous global terrorist organization, armed to the teeth with conventional weaponry as well as all kinds of futuristic lasers and death-rays, vs. a multinational elite fighting team composed of experts of every conceivable form or warfare and any even remotely related fields.

In every episode, fighter jets and helicopters were shot down, vehicles and building blown up, boats and submarines sunk, people being fired at all the time -- yet no-one ever got killed.

I know I'm not the only one who remembers the surreal silliness of all this, but the only reason I mention it is because there's precious little to mention about the movie -- and none of it even remotely positive.

I didn't expect much when I got this, but I never expected it to be so relentlessly, mind-numbingly shitty. This movie failed on all possible fronts. Explosions, destruction .... yeah, I think I've seen that before.

Hot women in skintight leather/latex firing big guns? Seen that many times before too -- much, much better done than here.

Avoid at all costs. This movie is a piece of shit.

Samantha Darko. The sequel to Donnie Darko. Years after his death, his little sister experiences weired dreams about the end of the world. Not that bad, but in no way as good as the original. Daveigh Chase already played Donnie darko's sister in the original movie. One of the few movies without visible ethnic minorities.

Space Marine lands in Norway of 970 during Viking Era. He inadvertently brings a monster to the planet. The marine and the vikings ally up to fight that beast. Surprisingly, the movie isn't as bad as it sounds. The vikings are depicted as a sane and tribal/organic society, not as brainless slashers. The action sequences are well-made and the storytelling is not second-hand junk. If you want to have some entertaining hours without the need to contemplation...this is your movie.

I had never gotten round to watching this film. I had put it off for sometime, judging not to watch it through having heard the bad reviews it got.

I thought it a very good film. Well worth the watch.

Good movie yes, alto it showed little of what the groups vision was for post-war Germany. Namely a constitutional monarchy along the lines of the UK. Because that was in their eyes the best insurance against such a man gaining so much power again in the future.

Threads

Threads is a 1984 television docudrama depicting the effects of a nuclear war on the United Kingdom and its aftermath. Written by Barry Hines and directed by Mick Jackson, Threads was filmed in late 1983 and early 1984. The premise of Threads was to hypothesize the effects of a nuclear war on the United Kingdom after an exchange between the Soviet Union and the United States escalates to include the UK.

Avatar, truly one of the best in terms of special effects and very touching for a sci-fi. I usually cringe at James Cameron's dialogue but this was well scripted compared to say, Titanic. I fully support race-mixing with blue space aliens, BTW.

Just sat down and watched Outlander. For some reason only Beowulf gets made into movies, and that's what this was, another version of the same old, same old. It wasn't bad, it was just inherently boring. Good thing John Hurt was in it, otherwise I don't think I would have enjoyed it as much as I did.

"You know there's something you should know and I'm going to tell you so! Don't sweat, forget it, and enjoy the show! IT'S PARTY TIME!!!

A rapping dog in 1912!! What the hell is this shit????????????????????

That's right, nothing says 'party time' like one of the greatest maritime disasters in history. Just forget about the 1,500 passengers either drowning or freezing to death in the North Atlantic!! And just as you literally can't believe what you're seeing and hearing, the film throws in a whole load of visual cues to underline its own madness! Then we're treated to Mexican Mice wailing on their guitars in the background!!

This was a complete abomination of Cinema. I can't believe this film even exists.

Currently a 1.4 on IMBD. Seriously, it's that fucking bad. Oh yeah, and this film actually has a "happy ending" too.

Just watched Creation….not Origin, got the title wrong. It’s a truly beautiful film, a moving portrayal of Charles Darwin’s mental struggle and the implications of his theory of natural selection, both for society at large and his family in particular. The central body of the film revolves around his oldest daughter Annie who died of TB, she acts as his conscience in the film and the inability of Charles and Emma to come to terms with her death is a central theme. It is a slow moving film and a touch sentimental, the scene where he walks hand in hand with the ghost of his daughter at the end…..it’s nice to see the human context of the man’s work.

It’s based on the book Annie's Box:

Okay, let's see....

Last night I watched Inglourious Basterds (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0361748/), fell asleep half way through, and for a Tarantino movie (which I generally like) it was surprisingly boring and predictable.

:) :) / 5

On Monday we went to the movies and saw Soul Kitchen (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1244668/), that was hilarious and extremely well-directed, with Moritz Bleibtreu in a surprisingly convincing role as the guido :) A must see if you're in for some good laughs.

:) :) :) :) 1/2 /5

Push (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0465580/) - a decent sci-fi adventure involving "gang wars" between people with special supernatural abilities. It was a good watch, two hours pleasantly spent.

:) :) :) / 5

Julie and Julia (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1135503/) - well, we overall liked it but it was less than we expected. Let's say it lacks a bit in nerve, it can get a little boring at times but overall it was OK. I didn't like Meryl Streep at all in that role.

The House of the Devil, a fun return to the 70s/80s genre of horror films- but made in 2009. Inspired by the Satanic Panic of those years, was well-done and got to the point where I actually had to leave the room at one point (which never usually happens when I watch horror flicks). It's a very humorous movie about Estonian history.

Plot: A fake historic epic on the Middle Ages and Estonia's not-so-glorious past.

Year 1208. The first Eastward enlargement of Europe is under way. Brutal forces of the Teutonic Order are steadily marching on. In their path live a simple and peaceful people, whose main pastimes include cultivating the earth, singing and, if possible, doing both at the same time. They are the Estonians. Ignorant in the ways of war, they find an unlikely leader in a young boy with Catholic upbringing. In their fight for freedom, the Estonians encounter numerous obstacles, including the Germans, French, Russians and, worst of all, the Latvians. Will they succeed in defeating their enemies or will they experience a cultural awakening?

I say! Bad show old man! Arnie finds a match….I require your top hat, breaches, coat, shirt, waistcoast, shoes, leggings, undergarments, frill, gloves and cane…the man challenges him to a duel, which Arnie naturally wins being a cybernetic organism from the 21st century, he takes the man’s flintlock and half a dozen cartridges, he finds a monocle in the jacket pocket…….he takes the dead man’s driver (who has a Cockney accent) before he goes he enquires after Josiah Conner, great, great, great grandfather of John Connor, then he enters the carriage and it’s off to London…..

……..The next scene Kristanna Loken appears in a burst of lightning……personally I would have her running around in the buff, but decorum demands something…..perhaps she could keep her red leathers…..I often wonder how people had sex in the 19th century by the time you got all that clobber off her corsets and the like you really couldn’t be arsed anymore…..

Anyway I think you’re on to something Tolleson.:thumb001:

I went to the movies with a couple of girlfriends last night (half price Tuesdays). The four of us saw Shutter Island.

http://i41.tinypic.com/72cew3.jpg

Wow. What a good story. And well there's no denying that Di Caprio is an amazing actor. (He should have won that Oscar for his portrayal of Howard Hughes in The Aviator!)

Then our party split off and my BFF K. and I sneaked (snuck?) into to see Green Zone. Yes you read right, we sneaked in!! And didn't get caught! Hahaha there's a first time for everything in life! :D

http://i39.tinypic.com/fasosh.jpg

Another great flick! I was not disappointed. I appreciate Matt Damon's acting talents as well I have to say.

The first movie is based on the book by the same name (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shutter_Island) while the other is said to have been inspired by the book Imperial Life in the Emerald City (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Imperial_Life_in_the_Emerald_City)

I guess I have more reading to do this summer. :)

I'd put this film off for some years now, but when I read a review from a respected member of the film forum I am a member of who had screamed nothing but praise, I just had to watch it.

I'm glad I did.

I'm still blown away by it all at the minute, so words aren't free to pick off the trees here, but this film had everything I love. Action, murder, family heartbreak and loss, discovery of oneself and innermost being, hope, revenge and reconciliation.

I just only hope Mel Gibson does us Northern Europeans justice with his next up and coming film.

We hardly appear, just in the last scene... Well, there we came to put a little order in there -those bullies...-.

The main character, if I'm not wrong, belonged to one of the many tormented tribes that joined the Spaniards to help them and guide them to those evil amerindian "empires". Yes, we put some order, at least until they claimed for their independence. Now they invade us looking for the "order" they lost -and couldn't keep- in our own old land.

Anyway, good film.

Recently saw Paranormal Activity.

I was expecting it to be quite ground-breaking after hearing all of the hype surrounding it. Personally I did not find it very scary at all.

http://www.muzeconnects.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/movie_paranormal_activity.jpg

Sort of a Blair Witch Project set in a single house. I thought it was not that shabbily made at all, with a few genuinely sinister moments. However it gets repetitive quite quickly, and then just ends all of a sudden, with no particular turning point or climax.

And, as with all microbudget indie horrors, it had some amusing inconsistencies: for example, if you know you're being haunted by a malevolent demon who'll come into your bedroom at night and do horrible things to you; and you know the same demon already has killed another girl in the 60's, do you really want to leave your bedroom door open and turn off the lights every night? Would it really be so hard to leave a light on and maybe sleep in turns?

Also, if you need a demonologist and call for one, but find out he's out of town, you're s**t out of luck, because there is only one demonologist in the world.

And if you have definite proof on video of paranormal phenomena, make sure you don't call James Randi, because all he'll do is give you a $1 million check, and you sure don't want that to happen!

I saw the theatrical version (the one with the ending that allows for a sequel), but I just watched the original ending online and it seems much better.

Yet another film I had heard so much about yet never sat down and watched. Well, I sat down this evening and watched and was not disappointed. I wouldn't say it was a great film, but it certainly gets a seal of approval which would make me brag to anyone who wishes to listen to me and watch it.
I have to admit the film was outgrown by the as ever brilliant performances of Daniel Day Lewis and others; amongst them Maurice Roeves, and in all left me thinking what all the fuss was about.

Yet...as a man who endeavours to wish upon all indigenous peoples of the world, I found it an inspiring and emotional film.

The continuous soundtrack was not a new revelation upon my ears, as I have heard the track many many times before (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ilDakPjpZJ8).

I still think my love for one particular statue of antiquity, with the track above mentioned, beats all other YT entries though. ;)

I am sorry. There is a problem with Meyer's vampires, in that they sparkle. But what I should have said in regards to Anne Rice is, not that her vampires themselves are too bad, in fact I quite like the aristocratic vampires, but I hate her characters.

I had a night on my own last night, woohoo! I bought this great movie (http://www.blippr.com/movies/544095-Storm-Boy) on DVD recently, and I decided to watch it last night:

http://www.lovefilm.com/lovefilm/images/products/3/113373-large.jpg

I first saw it when I was a child myself, on the big screen. Essentially, the movie is about a boy who lives with his father in an isolated area, he befriends an aboriginal local and rescues three pelican chicks after their mother gets shot.

The boy hand rears the birds, while social services snoop around wanting to know when the boy (nicknamed Storm Boy) will go to school. His father hates civilisation and doesn't want his boy - who is a bright spark - to be in mainstream society. Storm boy is forced to let the pelicans go, but one returns.

For once, this was one of these low-budget movies and its message was simple. Brilliant movie.

Clash of the Titans, the new version. Not very impressive if you're like me and know more than a passing triviality about the myths. Like most Hollywood movies, overuse of CGI to create some impressive scenes, but not much else. The film had potential to be quite good, but it went off in a tangent of special effects and all things odd, the acting was good, Cameron Diaz was cast effectively as eye candy and gave a good account of a working mom trying to keep a house going, and being a social hostess.
The story could have been straight out of a Stephen King book, instead of a Thriller/Sci fi.
