What an insufferable piece of junk this highly-acclaimed artsy fartsy piece of noise was ...

I'm very much of a sex & violence traditionalist, and I though this was an excellent, worthwhile film.

I also don't see how it's overly sentimental -- in fact, one of the things I liked the most about it was the director's refusal to shift the perspective away from the main character, in order to deliver some pre-digested morality lesson.

Fish Tank tells ultimately a very traditional, even architypal story, and it does it well. The squalid setting is ultimately incidental, but also of some interest in itself imo.

Moon (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1182345/) (2009)

Can a "sad face" emoticon displayed on a computer screen move you nearly to tears? Watch this film and find out.

A very well (if not perfectly -- the story stumbles a bit about halfway through, then recovers admirably) executed first feature for director Duncan Jones -- who is David Bowie's son, btw.

The ending was somewhat abrupt, but a quick Googling revealed that a follow-up is on the way.

In the beginning the shades of 2001: A Space Odyssey seem almost overwhelming, but there's a reason for that, and a rather clever one, as the viewer eventually discovers.

Moon is a quality Hard SF flick, and one that promises even better things to come. :thumbs up

The last movie I wast was Europa Europa (1990). Its basically about a Jew trying to pass as a German. It's a pretty interesting movie so id recommend it to anybody.

Well I don't want to spoil anything of the movie but an Anthropologist in the movie classified the main character as East Baltid. Well the movie is in German but I downloaded it with different language sub-titles through torrents so if anybody is interested send me a message or something. But here is the description of the movie:

Europa Europa is a 1990 German language film directed by Agnieszka Holland. Its original German title is Hitlerjunge Salomon, which literally means Hitler-boy, i.e., Hitler Youth Salomon. It is based on the 1989 autobiography by Solomon Perel, a Jew who escaped persecution by the Nazis by masquerading as an Aryan. The film stars Marco Hofschneider and Julie Delpy, along with the real-life Perel as himself. The film is an international co-production between companies in Germany, France and Poland.

The film should not be confused with the 1991 Lars von Trier film Europa, which was initially released as Zentropa in the United States to avoid such a confusion.

Rashomon: The Devil's Gate (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0042876/), 1950

I had the same problem with this classic as with some other early Kurosawa films: the delivery of the actors. The Japanese speech, facial expressions and gestures are just too ... different for me to fully understand them. The hysterical laughter, screaming and rolling on the ground doesn't help matters either.

The theme, the unreliability of your fellow man, is of course universal. And the medium scene was truely scary.

I agree 100%; Vampire Hunter D, Ninja Scroll, and Akira are the trinity of anime classics. I would list Grave of the Fireflies, too, but it has very low re-watchability because of how incredibly depressing it is. It can be appreciated as a work of nihilistic avant-garde, but it lacks a lot of the entertainment value that Vampire Hunter D or Ninja Scroll are able to balance with the depth of their stories.

I know a lot of people put Miyazaki's works up there as well, but I find his works to be vapid and his animation style absurd. He's the Disney of Japan: hugely popular because he offers absolutely no real content.

The last film I watched was Oldboy a few days ago, it was in Korean with English subtitles and its very weird, its about the vengeance of a man and the reasons become clear in the end.
Its a very weird film but very good to watch.

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/6/67/Oldboykoreanposter.jpg

Plot:

Korean businessman Oh Dae-su is bailed out from a local police station by his close friend Joo-Hwan after a drunken fight, on the night of Dae-su's daughter's birthday. Dae-su calls her on a public phone, but as Joo-Hwan takes the phone, Dae-su disappears. Kidnapped and confined to a shabby room with no explanation, Dae-su is not allowed any contact and is fed only fried dumplings through a narrow slot. Experiencing hallucinations, his attempts at suicide are prevented by being gassed into unconsciousness. Thus he keeps himself fit and occupied with shadowboxing; hardening his knuckles by punching the wall. While watching television, he discovers that his wife has been murdered, his daughter sent to foster parents and that he himself is the prime suspect.
Dae-su is suddenly set free on the rooftop of a building 15 years after his imprisonment began, with a new suit. Dae-su is given a cellphone by a stranger and goes to a local restaurant, where he meets young sushi chef Mi-do (Kang Hye-jeong), who brings him to her home. Dae-su realizes he is being tracked through phone calls from his unidentified captor and instant messaging on Mi-do's computer. Dae-su locates the restaurant that provided the fried dumplings during his imprisonment (following a scrap of paper found accidentally cooked into one, giving Dae-su the symbol for "dragon" to go off of in his search), and subsequently the building he was held captive in, torturing the warden for information. He finds tape recordings of his captor that reveal little. He then fights his way out past numerous goons, suffering a knife wound to his back. When he collapses on the street, a stranger places him in a taxi, only to direct him to Mi-do's address and identify Dae-su by name.
The man, named Woo-jin (Yu Ji-tae), reveals himself as Dae-su's kidnapper and tells him that Dae-su must discover his motives. Mi-do will die if he fails, but if he succeeds, Woo-jin will kill himself. Later, Dae-su and Mi-do grow emotionally closer together and have sex. Dae-su discovers he and Woo-jin briefly attended the same high school and remembers spying on Woo-jin's incestuous relationship with his sister, Soo-ah (Yun Jin-seo). Dae-su, unaware of their familial relationship, inadvertently spread the rumor before transferring to another school in Seoul. Soo-ah's mental turmoil grew, causing physical signs of pregnancy and her eventual suicide. During the investigation, Woo-jin kills Joo-Hwan for insulting Soo-ah, enraging Dae-su further.
Dae-su confronts Woo-jin at his penthouse with the information but instead Woo-jin gives Dae-su a photo album. As Dae-su flips through the album, he witnesses his daughter grow older in the pictures, until discovering that Mi-do is actually his daughter. Woo-jin reveals that the events surrounding Dae-su were orchestrated to cause Dae-su and Mi-do to commit incest. It is also revealed that hypnosis and post-hypnotic suggestion were involved with Dae-su's imprisonment, and had been performed on Mi-do as well. A horrified Dae-su begs Woo-jin to conceal the secret from Mi-do, groveling for forgiveness before slicing out his own tongue and offering it to Woo-jin as a symbol of his silence. Woo-jin agrees to spare Mi-do from the knowledge and leaves Dae-su in his penthouse. As he rides alone in the elevator, he is struck by the vivid memory of his sister's death, in which he was complicit, and shoots himself in the head.
Dae-su sits in a winter landscape, where he makes a deal with the same hypnotist who conditioned him during his imprisonment, asking for her help to allow him to forget the secret. She reads his pleas from a handwritten letter and, touched by his words, begins the hypnosis process, lulling him into unconsciousness. Hours later, Dae-su wakes up, the hypnotist gone, and stumbles about before finally meeting with Mi-do. They embrace, and Mi-do tells Dae-su that she loves him, though whether Dae-su knows the secret is uncertain, as Dae-su smiles and his face slowly crumbles into one of anguish as the credits roll.

"based on true events"? It looks like an American slasher film. Any film that claims to be "based on true events" should be taken with more than one grain of salt; I mean, they opened "The Last Exorcism" with "based on true events", but the film has absolutely nothing to do with the events it was based on: the time, place, and a number of the details are changed for entertainment.

Anyway,

http://christiankocinski.files.wordpress.com/2009/09/d0046543_06013541.jpg

So much better than the Brando version. I think Anthony Hopkins is the only one who ever comes close to capturing Loughton's Captain Bligh, really. Which means I will soon be watching:

Harry Brown (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1289406/) (2009)

I can see the comparisons to Gran Torino with this film. Unfortunately, this one starts out stronger, but then degenerates to the level of simple action drama/revenge fantasy.

The director also fails to make the most of Caine's performance -- which borders on being criminal, considering the man is a living legend.

The same applies to the talented (and cute) Emily Mortimer as detective Frampton.

The glorification of vigilantism: unsure on that one. Are British people already so fed up with drug-addled, criminal chav scum, and so frustrated with the establishment's failure to do anything about the problem, that the kind of outcome presented in the film would win popular support?

Saw this one today at my university. It's a 2 hour long documentary about La Cantuta massacre (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/La_Cantuta_massacre) committed during Fujimori's regime.

We had the presence of several of the mothers of those killed, who fought for justice to be done for over a decade. Some started crying while giving us some words after the documentary was shown. I hope they will release a version with English subtitles soon. Stuff like this needs not to be forgotten, especially here, a big part of our own population has...

Leslie Howard plays Sir Percy Blakeney, an 18th century English aristocrat who leads a double life. He appears to be merely the effete aristocrat, but in reality is part of an underground effort to free French nobles from Robespierre's Reign of Terror. Based on the novel by Baroness Orczy. This one and Fish Tank (http://www.theapricity.com/forum/showthread.php?p=375419#post375419) are sort of companion pieces: they came out in the same year, and they both are coming-of-age stories about teenage girls in England -- only set almost 50 years apart.

I got the movie as a Story and I like Mads Mikkelsen a lot, he is a good actor but the movie was boring, a meaningful movie doesn't necessarily have to be interesting, different people different tastes, a movie is supposed not to bore the hell out of u, if I want something meaningful and boring I will get Trigonometry classes or something of that kind.

That's kind of a hard movie to make without making a "chick flick". Victoria was thoroughly obsessed with Albert - it was rather one of those "fairy-tale love stories" often reached for by the authors of romantic comedy scripts. Frankly, I was pleased to see a different side of Victoria being portrayed. While I myself have a very poor opinion of her later reign, especially her treatment of the Irish and her foolish and selfish seclusion that damaged the reputation of the monarchy in Great Britain permanently, even I know that's not the whole picture. It was rather refreshing to see a more positive take on her.

At any rate, I recently re-watched the other major portrayal of Victoria,

I highly recommend this movie; the twist ending is great! Osmund the young monk and Ulric the hard-bitten knight. A great juxtaposition and the transformation of the naive young monk into an embittered warrior of God.. This movie really took my breath away.

The narrator of the prologue and the epilogue was Wulfstan, a crusty old soldier and a veteran of the 100 Years War (he mentions King Edward, King Edward III actually) and the only survivor, other than Osmund, of the doomed expedition to root out heresy and necromancy in the wilds round Dunwich in the 14th century.

Rauta-aika (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0190919/) ("Iron Age")

A four-part television miniseries from 1982, recently re-released on DVD. Loosely based on the Kalevala, but with with several important differences in the plot.

The full title would translate to something like: The Iron Age: People of the So-called Kalevalan Age at the Mercy of Themselves, Each Other, Nature, Fate, Their Technology, Their Communities, Pitiless Time and the Twists and Turns of the Tale.

The long-winded title actualizes itself in women with 80's make-up and hair who

1. Get naked a lot
2. Give the men tasks and missions in cryptic language, which they are to carry out, if they wish win their/their daughters' favour. :p

Seppo Ilmarinen (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ilmarinen) (called simply "Ilmari" here) is imo the most fascinating figure in all mythology -- he is basically the first Sci-Fi character ever. He imagines, or dreams up, literally impossible things, things that defy all laws of nature and logic -- and then forges them out of gold, silver and iron.

Here, too, he upstages the ostensible main character Väinamöinen (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Väinämöinen) (called simply "Väinö" in this TV series) rather easily.

Strangely enough, as much as this film repulsed me by its cheapness, I find it useful to view as sort of a cautionary allegory of the dangers of left-wing existential thought/communism.

The house in the movie is beautiful. The movie almost seems to "get" us conservative types but in the end the viewer finds that it's more a condemnation of the French militant interpretation of left wing ideas (not enough "love") as opposed to a wholesale rejection of that which preservationists on this forum should reject. Worth viewing once, though.

And while I saw this film a few months ago, I must include it in this post because it was one of the most beautiful films I have ever seen in my life. It's very dear to me, now, and I cannot recommend it enough.

2RYq1PLdT0s

The Dagos are really able to take the genre of the Western and bring out its most transcendent qualities. Even though I like the American Westerns with the likes of John Wayne (which are riddled with overt American (almost Protestant/Calvinist) moralizing), the ones of the woppish persuasion avoid doing that and will thus reverberate throughout the ages in a similiar way the samurai narrative does in Japan.

It was an alright sort of movie, quite interesting to watch.

Plot:
Kate Coleman (Farmiga) and her husband John (Sarsgaard) are experiencing strains in their marriage after Kate's third child was stillborn. The loss is particularly hard on Kate, who is also recovering from alcoholism. They adopt Esther (Fuhrman), a 9-year-old Russian girl, from the local orphanage. While Kate and John's deaf-mute daughter Max (Aryana Engineer) embraces Esther almost immediately, their son Daniel (Jimmy Bennett) is less welcoming.

Kate grows suspicious when Esther expresses far more knowledge of sex than would be expected of a child her age. Her suspicions grow when Esther seriously injures another girl at school. While she initially believes Esther's claim that it was an accident, she is further alarmed when Sister Abigail (C. C. H. Pounder), the head of the orphanage, warns her and John that bad things always seem to happen when Esther is around. Esther overhears this and, as Sister Abigail is leaving in her car, Esther pushes Max into its path, forcing her to swerve off the road. Sister Abigail rushes to see if Max is hurt, but Esther kills her with a hammer. She convinces Max to help her hide the weapon in their treehouse. Kate is convinced that something is very wrong with Esther, but John does not believe her. Attempting to find out more about Esther, Kate finds the girl's hidden Bible and discovers that it came from the Saarne Institute in Estonia, which she eventually learns is a mental hospital. She e-mails a picture of Esther to them and asks for more information.

Daniel learns about Sister Abigail's death from Max. Esther overhears him detail a plan to retrieve the hammer to prove Esther's guilt. While Daniel searches the treehouse, Esther sets the treehouse ablaze in an attempt to kill Daniel and destroy the evidence. Daniel falls to the ground trying to escape, and is knocked unconscious. Esther attempts to kill him with a rock, but Max stops her. While Daniel is hospitalized from his fall, Esther slips into his room and smothers him with a pillow, stopping his heart, but doctors quickly revive him. Kate, realizing what happened, attacks Esther, but orderlies help John restrain her. As John takes Esther and Max home, doctors sedate Kate.

That night, Esther tries to seduce a drunken John, who finally realizes Kate was right. He threatens to send Esther back to the orphanage. Meanwhile, as Kate is coming out of sedation, she receives a call from a doctor at the Saarne Institute, who reveals that Esther is actually a 33-year-old woman named Leena Klammer. She has hypopituitarism, a condition that stunted her physical growth, and has spent most of her life posing as a little girl. The doctor tells Kate that Leena is extremely violent and has murdered at least seven people. Among her victims were a family that adopted her in Estonia, whom she killed because the father rejected her romantic advances.

Leena flies into a rage after being spurned by John, and ransacks her room. Then, after removing the makeup, false teeth and body wrappings that enhanced her illusion as youthful "Esther", Leena kills him with a knife. Max sees this, and hides. Kate, unable to get John on the phone, rushes home and finds him dead. Leena gets a gun from John's safe and shoots Kate in the arm, then goes searching for Max, finding her in the greenhouse. While Leena shoots at Max, Kate crawls onto the greenhouse roof, breaks through the glass above Leena, and lands on her, knocking her out. Kate takes the gun and leaves the greenhouse with Max.

Leena regains consciousness and finds Kate outside near a frozen pond. Leena lunges at Kate, knocking the gun out of Kate's hand and hurling them both onto the ice. As Max watches from a hill above, she picks up the gun and tries to shoot Leena, but hits and shatters the ice instead, causing Kate and Leena to drop into the water. After a brief struggle, Kate climbs partially out of the pond with Leena desperately clinging to her legs. Leena, hiding a knife behind her back and reverting to her little-girl persona, begs Kate not to let her die. Kate angrily responds that she is not her mother, and kicks Leena in the face, sending her sinking back into the pond. Max and Kate are met by the police moments later.

Jane Eyre (1996)

Franco Zeffirelli's take on this oft-adapted classic (fourth film version already, with another one coming later in 2011).

As usual, Zeffirelli is very loyal to his subject matter. And equally usually for Zeffirelli, the casting is terrible.

In fact, him casting Serge Gainsborough's daughter (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charlotte_Gainsbourg) as Jane is probably the most catastrophic of all his mind-boggling casting decisions. And mind you, this is the man who cast Mel Gibson as Hamlet. :rolleyes2:

I disagree. Gettysburg is soaked to the gills with pro-Yankee bias. Although I will admit I think Sheen might make a better Lee than Duvall.

Either way they're both better than this tripe:

My favourite Civil War films remain:

A Single Man (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1315981/)

A day in the life of an English university professor, living in early 60's Los Angeles, who is unable to come terms with the death of his younger American gay lover.

Based on a novel by same name (which I have not read) by Christopher Isherwood (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christopher_Isherwood), and directed by the fashion designer Tom Ford (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tom_Ford).

Visually this film is stunning (what do you expect with a gay fashion designer for director? :p), but rather lacking in the content department. Plus, the ending is absurd.

Nevertheless, I'll be interested to see what project Ford sinks his teeth into next (this is his directorial debut).

It's Kind of a Funny Story

A goy watches his halfbreed and Jewish friend making it in the schooling system and has a moment of doubt which make him end up in a psych ward (of course).

In this ward he realises that Jews, Arabs and Blacks are really decent people and Freddy Mercury was a man whose music inspires mad people.

Our lovable lead character then gets a hard on for his Jewish friends halfbreed GF, but then remembers that the white girl hitting on him is actually his true love.

In amongst this was another story, but I forget what it was seeing as my ass had an abundance of knots that needed to combed out.

I read something about it. Is it any good or is it just a lot of voilence and no depth/storyline at all?

I'd (seriously) recommend it to:

Hardcore feminists
Fundamentalist Christians

I liked Taking Chance, it was really touching for a movie.

Pretty ridiculous in many ways, but the fanboy in me still left (reasonably) satisfied. I'd rate this one above X3: The Last Stand, but below the first two ones.

Michael Fassbender as Erik Lensherr/Magneto and Nicholas Hoult as Hank McCoy/Beast both did a great job in their roles. James McAvoy as XAvier less so, although he wasn't awful by any means.

But Don Draper's wife as Emma Frost? Gimme a break!

Der Untergang was only sad in that it told the tragic story of human beings other than Shitler.

After getting off from work late this afternoon, arguably the best Batman movie ever made.

I liked the movie because it told the tales of Hitler and of others. I'm not sure if the movie's portrayal of Hitler was accurate though. I think Hitler gave up far too easily after he realized that there were not enough troops to reinforce Berlin. He should've kept on and retreated to Bavaria and continued the fight. When Hitler gave up, others just started to give up too. That was pretty telling of how dependent National Socialism was on Hitler.

Der Untergang - good movie, Alexandra Maria Lara was hot and she had a sweet accent. Anthony Hopkins, Steven Berkoff gave better impression of Hitler than Bruno Ganz. Ganz way more Alpinoid than Hitler and also shorter than Hitler taking into account Hitler wasn't small for his time it didn't fit in.

X-Men: First Class - nice movie, will remember that scene with Jackman,
l4HVnz9jkL4 Good to see our legend Serbedzija, not bad for an old man, having that scene with January!:D I enjoyed seeing & analyzing her too..

Also saw Yamato movie about legendary battleship, great battle scenes from her last Kamikaze mission!

Was a nice movie, alto there where a fair amount of continuity errors in this movie in respect to the other x-men movies. But liked how Erik was proved right at the end of the movie about how normal humans would respond to the knowledge that humans exist. Had written a more lengthier review in Dutch about it and do not really feel like repeating it here.
