Someone was asking me about GEDmatch results from the Moldavia region, current Romania and Republic of Moldova, so I decided to research this.
Eurogenes K13 results:
Blue - Republic of Moldova
Yellow - Moldavia in Romania
White - Could be either

Those guys were mixed with minorities, hence why they've been removed from the later versions of G25 and then put back as outliers (Moldavian_o).
Pretty decent North Atlantic average (25% rounded) score for country situated so eastern.
I know nothing about Romanian Moldavia, to me they are just Romanians. To most people Moldovans are the people from the country called Moldova. And I would be surprised if they have considerable differences between the regions because there are only 2.7 million Moldovans in the RM.

Republic of Moldova is just eastern part of historical Moldavia. Also smaller part of historical Moldova ended up in Ukraine.

Yeah, I've briefly read about that. In Russia where I grew up Moldovan just means from the Republic, just like Azerbaijani (that fact that there is also Southern Azerbaijan in Iran is not widely known).

Well yes, everyone born in R. Moldova is Moldovan by citizenship and hence Moldovan in my book. But in this thread, I'm concerned mainly about those who are born to Romance-speaking parents, because we want to compare with those from Romania. The main part of the Moldavian principality was on the territory of Romania, while this territory became more important only recently, during the Russian Empire and then the Soviet Union. People in the Republic are undoubtedly connected to those in Romania, given shared surnames. I doubt that the migration happened from East to West historically. It's only in the past 30 years that it started to swing from East to West.
Do these maps help to understand why there are regional differences? In short, the Central rural region is most homogenous, North has been historically mixed with Ukrainians and South with Bulgarians/Gagauz.

With such high Baltic no, they are not common, as I said early, the average is between 25 and 30%. Highest for an ethnic Moldavian is 34-35%, more higher is a sign of mixing.

So real Moldavian average is more southern shifted than that on Gedmatch?
I am asking because I am 95% Moldavian in mixed mode oracle according to Gedmatch.
If real Moldavian is a bit southern, and real Serbian, as we know, is a bit northern, they are probably on the same level of percentage Slavic and Vlach genetics.

The K15 average is done with 2 individuals that are Belarussian and Russian-Gypsy or something, it's not really representative.
Neither are some of the G25 results which are very southern and Bulgarian like.

Sorry, but what race do Amerindians belong - Caucasoid, Mongoloid or Negroid???
They were classified as Mongoloid in the past but here we're talking about genetic components. The minor Amerindian in Europeans is either noise or some North Eurasian signal. It may not be direct Turkic or Mongoloid admixture and no proper European has actual Native American ancestry.

about the original K13 Eurogenes/Germatch Moldavian reference for Moldavians - it still seems relevant, otherwise why would all Moldovans (both East and West) have it in their top 5 populations distance (also look at distance to Moldavian versus distance to Romanian):
EDIT: on mixed mode it becomes obvious it is too northeastern-shifted, sorry. it will be interesting to average the results we get on this thread for a more relevant Moldovan average and it'd be interesting to do it both for West of Prut and East of Prut Moldovans.

Well, it's not completely irrelevant, but it's not the best so to speak due to those users being mixed, which pushes them further North than the average. The current 10 samples from Stefan Voda on the contrary are too Southern for averages. Perhaps combining the two could lead to a better average.
I'll probably do that at some point.

Somebody should forward this thread to Seya, she tested both parents and one of them is full Romanian Moldovan (from south) as far as I know. Other is partly Greek.
Her fully Moldovan parent result would improve this average.

To what extent do Moldovans from Romania differ from Moldovans from Republic of Moldova, if they differ at all? I mean genetically, of course.
I know it's talked about it in the first post, but can someone sum it up for me? I'm not into genetics
btw: I didn't know there's a Moldova in Romania too before becoming a reader of this forum.

But you are just half Moldovan. Your result shouldn't be included in ethnic Moldovan average, just like I don't include mine in Croatian, and by blood I am 75% Croat.
You can add IncelSlayer instead.
but the half Ukrainian half Moldovan mix is all too common for Moldova to exclude it (for Suceava and Botosani counties in Romania, for northern Rep. Moldova and for Chernivtsi oblast' in Ukraine). anyway, we can try with and without me

I like how OP does it, separate average for full Moldovans and mixed Moldovans like you, so both are included but separate.

Yeah, and then what? For most people in my country Moldova/Moldavia = Republic of Moldova.

Yeah, and then what? For most people in my country Moldova/Moldavia = Republic of Moldova.
Is entire territory from Carpathians to Dniester river. Today Moldova, despite is considered a new state, is bassically eastern half of old country with the same name. In Romania is still exist the region Moldova, or more correct will be Moldavia for romanian part.

offtopic: Moldova has had cultural, historical and political continuity for over 6 centuries now, be it on its own be it as part of Romania or Russia, eversince the 1300s. funny how some people from 1-2 century-old nations come and patronize Moldovans on identity from time to time xD

offtopic: Moldova has had cultural, historical and political continuity for over 6 centuries now, be it on its own be it as part of Romania or Russia, eversince the 1300s. funny how some people from 1-2 century-old nations come and patronize Moldovans on identity from time to time xD
Just to check on something, didn't you say something about an Ukrainian surname for the guy from Botosani or am I thinking of something else?

Seems to work better with a penalty. Vlach + Slavic = Magyar  Surely there must be a joke like this somewhere.
Also no way that Zmey is not mixed, just look at you and him. Unless he has really old ancestry specific to those villages, which slowly and steadily assimilated the Slavs into Romanised folk, like a slowly cooked stew. I would research my family tree just in case, if I were him.

You didn't include Daos and the mixed adoptee though :)

Could be, but that surname seems most popular in Russia.
Was the half Azeri guy born in Moldova or Russia? I didn't add him, because I thought that he was born in Russia. I didn't understand in the end if Daos' ancestry is all from the territory of Moldova. If so then is it R. Moldova or Romanian Moldavia?

These two with surname Moldovan is debatable if they are Moldavians, no matter from Romania or Republic. And the reason is the surname itself.

The adoptee was adopted from Moscow but his birth certificate stated that his mother was Moldavanka.
Daos is maternally Ukrainian, paternally half Polish half Romanian, born in the Rep of Moldova.

I know, but firstly they exist in Moldavia and R. Moldova in comfortable numbers and secondly they both score too much Baltic for Wallachia and too much Baltic and/or too little Atlantic for Transylvania.
Obviously this isn't a scientific study and that's why academic data is most reliable.

This surname is very common in Romania, mostly in Transilvania, in Moldova region is very atypical. He is in top 20 most popular Romanian surnames. In Republic he exist too, but is more concetrate on periferic regions, especially from north, plus many people from minorites have it. And first time I hear about high Atlantic in Romanians from Transylvania, many score even lower than this individual, about Baltic, I don't know, the user Carpatz score 30% Baltic, but he is from Maramureș, not really Transylvania.

He scores 28%, but yeah, they could be either from there or Moldavia, since they fit with the rest. With regards to higher Atlantic, if I'm not mistaken right now, that's kind of what I noticed. I will create separate threads on Transylvania, Wallachia and then a summary thread for all 3 regions at some point in the future.

The problem is what in your list exist two individuals with the same surname, and you don't know anything about them. And their surname is not even in top 100 or even top 200 in today Republic, but is very common in Romania. This is the reason why I don't really belive they are locals.

That's comfortably in north Balkan range. Bosnia itself is more northern shifted than that.

I know that they are not a family or relatives, as I've checked just in case. I could simply keep them here and then also include in the Transylvania table. When we will have the summary, they will be assigned to the "white" region, i.e. uncertain origin

A+name+ței/sei is the most common type of surname (I mean type, random surnames are more common) in Romanian Moldova, despite it being originary from the upper half of the area. Adochiței, Atodiresei, Adomniței, Avasiliței, etc.
Popescu is somewhat common. After this one, -escu names are as common as names ending in -achi/-ichi, indicating Greek ancestry.
Munteanu is a common surname.
Tranylvanians are not identicall to Moldavians, much more Balkan.
I'm basing this on K13/15 results, not MyHeritage/23andme.

Yeah, mine is pretty common in R. Moldova, but actually more widespread in Transylvania than Moldavia.
Either someone had a lot of sex in Hunedoara or it spread from there East. I think that it spread from there because the village of the same name is recorded there in 1330 in Magyar records, changed names to a Saxon variation in 1448, then returned to the old name in 1642 and remained as such until this day. Thank god for arcanum.hu, which has a wealth of records on this.

My grandpa says his paternal great-grandfather probably came from Ardeal. I highly doubt it since our family name is technically non-existent in Transylvania, it only exists in Moldova mostly and sometimes Wallachia. I have also checked an old marriage registry used for looking up names and it does not exist.
Of course, it's possible that he just took a family name when he settled in Vaslui.

Our Gypsies are different from the ones in the region from a social POV, because they are integrated into the dominant culture, just as most other nationalities.
We are skilled at accepting others into our culture. That's probably connected to us being so few, so anyone who's interested in us feels like a novelty.

I'm against multiculturalism. That's typical Soviet/post-Soviet BS, i.e. "friendship of peoples". In Russia the same shit was made the state ideology. The problem is they don't even distinguish between natives and immigrant groups. Basically everyone living in the country is considered part of the "ethnic mosaic". Greeks, Azerbaijanis, Poles, etc. have nothing to do with Bessarabia. That's how the native majority is being undermined/diluted.

Well her surname is Russian, so she is most likely of Russian descent first of all, but was born in Chisinau, Moldova and apparently has also got some local mix. My guess would be either 1/4 or 1/8 Roma. She matches the full Roma (Arap) and also other full Romas from Wallachia, which I will publish in the yet to be created Wallachian thread.

Let's play a guessing game. Can you predict how she would score on K13?
https://www.publika.md/echipa/marina-urusbaeva_2201.html
From 14th second
https://www.publika.md/atentie-emisiunea-live-cu-lili-lozan-isi-schimba-ora-de-emisie_1348021.html
Urusbaeva sounds non-Slavic, non-Russian.
I'd guess her as 25-30% or so.

High West Asian and South Asian seem to be characteristic of people with Roma ancestry. Would have never guessed she has any though. Harappaworld?
Somebody should forward this thread to Seya, she tested both parents and one of them is full Romanian Moldovan (from south) as far as I know. Other is partly Greek.
Her fully Moldovan parent result would improve this average.
i doubt they will add my father in that graphic. although he's fully Moldavian from Vrancea for generations and he only scores Romania and Moldova on 23andme, he plots south with Bulgarians and that will mess up the average. anyone who doesn't meet the expectations is declared mixed and cut off. no one will ever find the moldovian average, at least not on TA.

No, they don't. Everyone who is put as mixed is actually of mixed heritage. I have all the kits, so if there are unbelievers then they should simply PM me and ask for them. Then they can check for themselves and do the detective work. All people are easily googleable.

Yes, she is at least 1/8 Tzigane. Maybe even 1/4
(tzigane (https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/tzigane) is an actual obsolete word in English)

I think you father is typical southern Moldovan, because people from fully ethnically Moldovan district in RM plot with Bulgarians too, even bit more south than them. And those were academic samples.
It seems like southern Moldovans, regardless are they from Romania or RM are very Balkan genetically, while central and northern regions are quite more Slavic influenced.
Moldova doesn't seem genetically homogenous at all and I speak for full Moldovans not minorities like Ukrainians or Gagauz.
Could you post your father's K13 values? Ion should definitely add him to the chart :)

Yep all of Romania and R. Moldova generally follow the same North to South gradient, with some minor exceptions here and there.
But Romania's North to South gradient is much stronger in the East than in the West.

That's pretty inaccurate imho.
There were plenty of Moldovans posted on these forums and none of them was anything similar to the 'Moldovans' on G25. Many were posted in Ph2ter's plotting threads and again no such Moldovans.
We don't know exactly what kind of Moldovans these guys are...
Just because they were used in academic study doesn't mean that these studies are hundred percent accurate. There is even a 'Macedonian3' sample in G25 from a study and that guy is not really a Macedonian but Bosniak. There are many Bosniaks in Macedonia and they are pretty much integrated in the country.
Furthermore you can't take samples from a single village in Moldova as representative and average for all ethnic Moldovans.
That would be the same if we collect samples from South-Eastern Bulgarians who live close to Black Sea and take that as an average.
I have few samples from those Bulgarians and all of them end up in the Greek cluster, however that's not the Bulgarian average...

Even for only a part of Moldova we can't they are representative because these guys are pretty different from any Moldovans we have seen so far...
Plus southern plotting doesn't mean much unless you define what that means?
I've seen results of some Vlachian Romanians however and many have some extra west Asian which pulls them as you say 'south'.

Da, dar daca persoana e din Romania, atunci probabil ca e amestecata. La noi familiile ucrainizate nu indica neaparat geneflow recent. Pe timpul Imperiului Rus si a Uniunii Sovietice, in unele locuri familiile autohtone erau sistematic slavicizate.
'North_European 36.13 Pct'
This result doesn't plot like those 'Moldovans' from G25 I am pretty sure...
I am myself at 28.78 North European on that Dodecad calculator and those G25 Moldovans almost plott the same as me.
Plus Seya seems to doesn't know what exactly her father is judging by the conversation... Also she said that he has some Aromanian ancestry no?
As for the other person, I haven't seen her results. If you're kind to show them?
i have aromanian from my mom side. i didn't know they get dobrogea regions on 23andme. i thought they would get northern greece or something. that's why i imagined it was from my father side. but it's not.

So it seems she is only half southern Moldovan, and already pretty southern shifted. Therefore I don't see why full southern Molodvan wouldn't plot like those RM samples from Ștefan Vodă.

You said they are representative for Southern Moldova did you?
Even for only a part of Moldova we can't they are representative because these guys are pretty different from any Moldovans we have seen so far...
Plus southern plotting doesn't mean much unless you define what that means?
I've seen results of some Vlachian Romanians however and many have some extra west Asian which pulls them as you say 'south'.
Dude, perhaps you haven't looked at what has been posted here. You can't just ignore all the samples posted here.
We have breakdowns by district and those Moldovans are pretty typical for the South. Cahul Moldovans (also South) are similar to those from G25. My mom is 1/2 Southern (Cahul) and 1/2 Ukrainian. Her Moldovan/Romanian part seems to coincide with theirs.
There is a big difference here.
Your situation with the Macedonians not being accurate is similar to those of the old Moldavians (p2hter also used them because they are from Eurogenes). Davidski himself deleted them and messaged me that they are not representative, as he found that they are mixed with Russians. The G25 Moldovans on the other hand are collected by the Reich laboratory. Those are fully verified and handpicked as opposed to the unverified Macedonians and old Moldavians. For example, all the G25 Moldovans are recorded in the Reich lab, while your Macedonians are not on that list. Hence, I'm not surprised that their data is dubious.

Because historically is basically impossible for people from that village from Ștefan Vodă to have such result. People from that village live in a former Tatar territory, and they migrated in that area from more northern parts. They phenotipically don't differer from other Moldavians who live much more north, except some local minor exotism.

two Moldovan guys having a conversation in good English - no one in Bucharest would believe it. one, because why would Moldovans speak to each other other then in Russian or they gibberish Moldovan dialect? then, in English?! lol, yeah, sure xD
because one of the ideas that Romanians have of Moldovans is that the Moldovan youth speaks no English. I don't know where this stereotype comes from. there's a lot of Moldovans working corporate jobs in Romania, I assume they must speak good English to be hired.

If you were to go on Anthrogenica, there is a clear record on there in the Romanian thread that I'm maintaining, that I was the first one to question the authenticity of the Stefan Voda samples. At that time I made the claim that they are probably Gagauz. But after a while Reich released their exact location and name of the village and it is clear on casata that the place is fully Moldovan/Romanian. I personally don't have a strong counterargument against his data. The samples that I posted from Cahul, one from Ungheni and one with the surname Popa are probably pretty similar to them. There is also another one who is shifted to the South in a similar manner, which I will share in the next update, surname Pindus. It is non-existent in Romania, but it has 21 families in Chisinau. It is not found primarily in the city though, but the villages around it.

He can have foreign ancestry, or he is not even from RM. Moldavians can't be so much southern, this historically is imposible, only if these individuals have foreign ancestry, since such individuals are plenty in RM. This is another reason why in norhern areas many with such results looks like outliers.

I will only give one example here. This person will be labelled as a full Roma in the Wallachian thread. She also has photos in traditional Gypsy folk costumes.
Most Gypsies that we see on the streets though are piss poor and/or living a nomadic lifestyle, so they look less pleasant than they could be.
Obviously those that give a damn about DNA and/or are more educated are able to take better care of themselves. Perhaps that's why they don't stand out, at least from my point of view.

No, she was born in Ukraine and is married to a native Ukrainian speaking Ukrainian. But her maiden family name, Tsurkan (https://forebears.io/surnames/tsurkan), is of Moldovan/Romanian origin (original Latin version, as hers is transliterated from Cyrillic probably, is Turcan (https://forebears.io/surnames/turcan)). It is very popular in R. Moldova.
I think she's a half Ukrainian mix. She looks like the female version of Nurzat, who is half Ukrainian.

Nurzat
04-01-2020, 11:31 PM
No, she was born in Ukraine and is married to a native Ukrainian speaking Ukrainian. But her maiden family name, Tsurkan (https://forebears.io/surnames/tsurkan), is of Moldovan/Romanian origin (original Latin version, as hers is transliterated from Cyrillic probably, is Turcan (https://forebears.io/surnames/turcan)). It is very popular in R. Moldova.
I think she's a half Ukrainian mix. She looks like the female version of Nurzat, who is half Ukrainian.
I've used for Moldavian an average of some samples I find more relevant (about 10 samples both from RM and RO), outliers excluded:
Moldavian,23.542,27.288,16.546,10.864,16.132,1.706 ,0.3,0.848,1.9975,0.418,0.396,0.054,0.032
distance is not ideal (normal for mixed people but can also point to a different source we can't figure out):
Target: Tsurkanka
Distance: 4.3030% / 4.30296412
53.8 Moldavian
46.2 Belorussian
Target: Tsurkanka
Distance: 5.6200% / 5.61997732
51.2 Southwest_Russian
48.8 Moldavian
Target: Tsurkanka
Distance: 6.1322% / 6.13217471
56.4 Ukrainian_Lviv
38.8 Moldavian
4.8 Ukrainian_Belgorod
when I place Belorussian in the source it gets all the % against Ukrainian/Russian/Slovak/Lithuanian. so Belorussian (north Ukrainian?) seems best proxy for about half of her ancestry

We have the 2nd, I'll add the first. Oprisan is from Romania's Moldavia btw, as the surname doesn't exist in R. Moldova.

I've got another person from Central Moldova, in this village from Cimislia at the crossroads with Ialoveni and Hincesti.
https://i.imgur.com/Xtxmnuk.png
As was the case with the person from Hincesti, this person also scores 29% Baltic. Other persons already posted in the list from Central Moldova are from Ungheni - 26%, Zmey Gorynich who was a mix of Ialoveni and Telenesti at 33%, my dad at 32%. His paternal village in Orhei though is next door to Rezina and at the same latitude as Falesti, so technically he can be considered both Central and Northern.
https://i.imgur.com/Wq2IiS0.png
Speaking of Northern, there are 3 more samples and it seems that as Aspirin noticed previously, 33% is more or less the average there among unmixed Moldovans/Romanians.
The new ones are from:
Ocnita - 33%
Balti (Moldovan/Romanian maiden surname name) - 31%
Balti (offspring of the above, but dad's surname is Russian and she uses the feminine desinence "-a" after "-ov" meaning that their family's native language is most likely Russian) - 33%
This surname is also most popular among Latvian Russians than anywhere else, so on her dad's side I'm not sure of the origin, but given that she doesn't deviate much from the mom, dad might be heavily mixed locally.
I'll post the full update later in the evening.

Baltic 21.83 Pct
Hard to really understand what has gone on in this ountry to see such diverse results, more specifically, how some score 20-20 na/baltic when you see even Bulgarians with more na/baltic sometimes. You'd expect things to go up the morth north you are but it's not necessarily reality.

No additional samples have been added, but I sorted the table to make it easier to read
Also one with the surname Moldovan was Roma mixed, so has been moved to the mixed category.
I also forgot to add Tsurkan to Ukrainian mixed category, so that's also been changed.

He is just swarthy, is a common thing in central and southern regions to see such persons time by time, in the north is lesser, but exists too. Is just the contrast which make him to look like that.

Yep, her daughter's South Asian is halved, so no surprises here.
Since full Romas score between 20-25% South Asian on K13, Moldovan is probably 1/4 Roma, without apparently knowing it.
I'm deleting her from the Moldavia and R. Moldova table then, since we are not sure if her Csango side is from there.

Yep, all of those ending in "-ev" and most of those ending in "-ov" are definitely of Bulgarian origin.
I don't know the background of that person's grandparents, but the person is a Romanian speaker, has a Romanian/Moldovan surname and forename.
I also personally think that their results are typical of the central area, judging by the samples that I found so far. I can't say if that individual is Northern shifted for Gura-Galbenei, because I haven't seen any other samples from there. As I already said, I don't trust that phenotypes are reliable predictors for one's autosomal DNA.

He could be touched, but after great-grandparent level, most of the admixture gets reshuffled so much that it gets almost impossible to understand where it comes from, especially if we are talking about ethnicities that are relatively close genetically. At that stage, it's hard to prove with autosomal DNA and only a family tree will help.
